163 followers · 255 posts · Server fosstodon.orgIt feels laughably complex for what I'm working on, but I'm really liking this #logging stack of #OpenTelemetry, #Jaeger, #ElasticSearch, and #Kibana. OpenTelemetry's spans are really cool, and you get a lot out of the box with the auto-instrumentation (automatic spans for supported libraries like Postgresql and Nextjs). Attaching properties to spans is the cherry on top.
I'm not super happy with how to logs show up on Kibana, you end up with a weird nested query syntax. But it works!

12 followers · 58 posts · Server fosstodon.orgI'm glad #OpenSearch kept the open source part of #Elasticsearch patched and buildable, but the basic experience of looking at some log files is like stepping into a time machine. Strip away all the plugins bolted on to handle interesting-but-niche use cases, and what's left is a version of #Kibana that hasn't changed in nearly a decade. I should not need to download #Filebeats 7.10 in 2023, but I'm also not going to set up some streaming data pipeline just to watch website logs.

#Mastodon doesn't have full text-search, so I built my own. Actually just a pet project to learn #NodeJS, #TypeScript and glue everything together with #Kafka and #Elasticsearch. Data is ingested in real-time via #ServerSentEvents. Visualization and search through #Kibana. I'll publish the source code over the weekend
