Yakult is not only meaningful to me for "childhood memories of visiting grandparents in Japan" reasons, it was also an eye-opening "Wait, this thing that I thought was uniquely Japanese is also a part of Korean culture?!" moment via a scene in the Canadian sitcom Kim's Convenience, when two Korean-Canadian characters muse over whether "Yakult" is just "yogurt" spoken with an accent.

(Wikipedia says it actually gets its name from the #Esperanto word "jahurto", meaning "yogurt")

I've been watching a lot of #KimsConvenience recently, and that's how I know Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Appa). I forgot he was already in season 2 of #TheMandalorian, and when I heard him in the new episode I was surprised that he speaks without an accent 🙈
The suspicion had crossed my mind that his accent in Kim's Convenience is exaggerated, but I wasn't sure.

It’s a #Sitcom sort of mood this weekend.

I loved #Community, #ModernFamily, #30Rock, #TheITCrowd, #FullerHouse, #KimsConvenience, #SchittsCreek, #TheGoodPlace, #Cougartown, #Frasier, #UnbreakableKimmySchmidt, #Superstore, and #BrooklynNineNine when they were still on air.

I’m currently enjoying #ThatNinetiesShow and #MalcolmInTheMiddle, and I can’t wait for more seasons of #TedLasso and #Schmigadoon.

The critical companion to #KimsConvenience was going to be my 2nd self-published book. But other than the reviews, I don't think I have enough shit to form a satisfying book, so I put it on hold. That left me trying to figure out what to do.

I was leafing through Monsters of the Week, a 2018 compilation of A.V. Club #XFiles reviews. That's when I realized there ought to be a critical companion like this for the 3 animated #StarTrek shows (actually 4, because Short Treks did 2 animated shorts).

I can't go to the music supervision firm for help because the only way to contact the firm, its phone number, doesn't work.

All this shit killed all the fun out of working on the book.

It had a dope-ass cover though. I used #GIMPSoftware to design it.

My lengthy reviews of all 65 episodes of #KimsConvenience with song title info will be published someday. I just don't know where they'll go right now. I'm thinking of someday launching a Patreon where the reviews would be exclusives.

The #KimsConvenience music supervisor who died ran a Toronto music supervision firm that used to post every song title from Kim's before the season when he passed away. The summer of 2021 was the summer of me (in #SanJose, California) going through tons of Canadian bands' Bandcamps and SoundClouds to identify Kim's Season 4 and 5 song titles.

Although I was able to identify most of the songs thanks to those Bandcamps and SoundClouds, I have a list of songs I was never able to identify.

I was also frustrated with how guest star info after #KimsConvenience Season 2 and song title info after Kim's Season 3 are so damn incomplete.

For some reason, a ton of guest stars like Lisa Berry and Jewelle Blackman were uncredited on Kim's after Season 2—IMDb omits some of them from the Kim's cast lists too—so I had to go find out on social media several of their names.

I had some fun designing nifty cover art for my complete critical companion to #KimsConvenience. I even interviewed film critic Norm Wilner, a champion of Kim's (he has an account here—@normwilner—but he appears to be sticking to Twitter), for the book. But I hit a creative lull.

I wanted to interview Korean writers for the book, but I couldn't find any. One Korean writer was interested in being interviewed, but she appeared to be too busy with motherhood, so I didn't want to bother her.

I wrote my #KimsConvenience episode reviews in the style of the A.V. Club's old TV episode reviews before G/O Media ruined AVC, except I didn't insert letter grades, I made references to '90s and '00s hip-hop and #BloodAndBone more often than an AVC TV writer would, and I didn't make any spelling errors.

AVC's TV episode reviews were often well-written, but they were also famously full of typos, which drove my inner proofreader bonkers (one of my tasks at my university newspaper was proofing).

It stemmed from trying to write a complete critical companion to #KimsConvenience.

I had finished writing reviews of all 65 episodes of Kim's in Oct. 2021. They're not mere recaps. (I don't like reading or listening to recaps of TV shows.) They're long reviews that go into whether or not things are funny or emblematic of how Kim's didn't have enough Korean Canadian writers (a problem that was especially evident in Season 4, the worst season of that #sitcom).
