It may have been in a New Yorker article about #kimstanleyrobinson, but I recently read that #sciencefiction is, at its core, about how to get closer to utopia. Even dystopian sci-fi serves as a warning to show us ways we could get further from utopia heading too far down a certain path.

Finally took Kim Stanley Robinson's "Red Mars" off the shelf. Wish I'd read it decades ago, when the idea of people settling on other planets – more to the point, surviving/cooperating on Earth long enough to do so – might have seemed less improbable. Still, I'm enjoying it as a feat of imagination and society-building

If you are into #backpacking, #hiking, or otherwise adventuring in the #mountains, you need to read #KimStanleyRobinson's (#KSR's) #TheHighSierra. It really feels like an adventure elder passing down #wisdom. Read it.

Coincidentally reading *Ministry for the Future * (by #KimStanleyRobinson) while seeing headlines about the #hottest day ever recorded on Earth and articles about unsurvivable wet-bulb temperatures.

I highly recommend the book. (It’s both enjoyable and existentially terrifying.)

I am also genuinely hopeful we (as a species) can get through the #climateCrisis. Sadly not nearly so hopeful we’ll get there without a *lot* of very bad times first, though.

#MinistryoftheFuture by #KimStanleyRobinson is a novel / treatise that describes a plausible scenario for how #ClimateBreakdown and #EcologicalCollapse will change us.

Tricky read with its restless movement between uneven plot and character development, a range of mini-essays, and a love letter to #Zurich. Much suffering is alluded to, but only the startling opening truly goes there. Still this pain is the crucial catalyst for the violent birth of a radical new way of living. Will stay with me.

Listening to the audiobook of “The Ministry for the Future.” So far, so good. Tried to read #KimStanleyRobinson’s #FortySignsofRain but just couldn't finish it.

Love this. Reminds me of Kim Stanley Robinson's ideas in a few of his novels that sails could again play a part in global shipping, in a slower and more sensible future. (Along with the return of dirigibles in the air.)
