If you are an early childhood educator, LISTEN TO THIS. I totally bought into Balanced Literacy & Lucy Caulkins’ methods of teaching kids to read. Now, I’m struggling to use a curriculum that is not evidence based. I now know that I have Not actually been teaching kids to read. I’ve been teaching them to SOUND like they’re reading. I have so much to unlearn and it’s overwhelming but I must and will do better. #kinderchat #EduTooters #education #literacy #kindergarten https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sold-a-story/id1649580473?i=1000583258897

Have a great week, folks. COme back next week when @CarrieMarshall1@twitter.com leads the show! #kinderchat
And, like, HOW LUCKY ARE WE, to get to do something SO INTERESTING every day? #kinderchat
I feel like our work is SO INTERESTING, and maybe that is just a sign that I'm in the right job, but I feel about child dev the way a 6 year old feels about Pokemon?! #kinderchat
MEGA thank you to @happycampergirl@twitter.com who took the reigns tonight as I move from swimming up current attempting to get to shore. Have a fantastic week, friends! #kinderchat
And isn't that ALSO one of the best things about this work - you can do it FOREVER, and still learn a fact, or. meet a colleague, that changes your whole understanding of something. I LOVE that part of our work! #kinderchat
I was also (and sometimes still am) surprised at how extraordinarily complex and difficult reading is, as a learned skill. #kinderchat
One of my favourite developmental lightbulb moments: my nephew recently turned 5. My brother DID NOT REALISE that he (nephew) was old enough to wipe his own tushy, until he read the child dev chapter of the #kinderchat book.
Ok, what is something you DID NOT KNOW about 5 year olds (or any age group, really) when you started teaching them? #kinderchat
COnfession: I have been listening to small humans explain Pokemon for like... 15 years? And I still retain/understand NOTHING. #kinderchat
sometimes they’re bored at a direction of the game (e.g. hop on one foot”) and sometimes they can’t do it (e.g. “skip”) so they make up their own movement and then other kids are excited to imitate them #kinderchat
A2: I had no idea children didn't know how they were getting home at the end of the day. I opened the door at the end of the day of my first day on the job and just assumed children knew if they were to go with a parent, on the bus, or with daycare. Hilarious! #kinderchat
AND YET WE EXPECT THEM TO SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN b/d/p/q.... #kinderchat

A1: One of my favorite milestones is you show them a triangle, they tell you it's a triangle, then you turn the exact triangle 90 degrees and they say it isn't a triangle anymore. 😂 #kinderchat

And how a kiddo who isn't crossing their midline yet will move their whole body if they are wriiting or drawing on the board, to keep their drawing area in front of their dominant hand. #kinderchat
I love when 5 year olds utilize their cognitive and physical abilities to expand on movement games, resulting in a more creative and challenging game that is more meaningful for them #kinderchat
My favourite developmental phenomenon is the midline thing - how one day, they can't touch their right ear with their left hand, and the next day, they can. #kinderchat

@happycampergirl #kinderchat Their curiosity is only matched by their enthusiasm.
