A preview soundbite from our next episode - in which I share a passage from "The Empty Space" in which director Peter Brook considers the Philadelphia audience response to his "King Lear" back in 1964:

Guess who's playing The Fool in our local production of King Lear? 🎭 Yours truly, Plumber A! Can't wait to trade mushrooms for Shakespearean witticisms! 😂🍄 Warning: May cause side effects of intense laughter and thunderous applause! 👏 #PlumberActing #Shakespeare #KingLear #BreakALeg #BitBook

An impressively tactile, if slightly over-ambitious, adaptation of King Lear from Vitagraph Studios.

Here's #MyShakespeareWinter part 33 of 37:
#KingLear is bleak: An elderly king splits his realm among the daughters claiming to love him the most, then loses his home & sanity...the pain of aging is portrayed with such poignant wisdom & beauty, it's the Bard's most haunting play

King Lear (DK,GB)
King Lear, old and tired, divides his kingdom among his daughters, giving great importance to their protestations of love for him. When Cordelia, youngest and most honest, refuses to idly flatter the old man in return for favor, he banishes her and turns for support to his remaining daughters. But G...

[1983] King Lear - Laurence Olivier and John Hurt played respectively Lear and the Fool in this production to great acclaim, with Olivier winning an Emmy for his performance. It was the last of Olivier's appearances in a Shakespeare play. At 75, he was one of the oldest actors to take on this enormously demanding role.

#Theatre performance of the year was definitely Kathryn Hunter as #KingLear at the #Globe this summer. And I so nearly didn’t go as I wasn’t in the mood for crowds or… anything really. I had forgotten who was in the title role (having booked just after my wife’s inquest) and couldn’t work out if it was a tiny man…? Truly one of those nights when you marvel: ‘I was here.’ https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2022/jun/19/king-lear-review-shakespeares-globe-kathryn-hunter #Shakespeare #KathrynHunter

"Instead of #KingLear having three daughters, Cordelia has three fathers - a writer, writer playing the role of the writer and myself, the director" quips Godard in a gravelly voice. The writer in this case is Norman Mailer. He says he can only do King Lear as a gangster film. Thus Lear becomes Don Learo. Learo is sniveling Burgess Meredith & Cordelia is Molly Ringwald. Chernobyl happened and wiped out the whole civilization. Movies and art are lost. The 'image' needs to be reinvented. #godard

From #IMDB:
"The show is heavily influenced by #Shakespeare 's 17th century tragedy #KingLear. #BrianCox, whose #Succession character is inspired by the play's titular monarch, played Lear throughout the '80s and '90s while touring with the #RoyalShakespeareCompany and #RoyalNationalTheatre."

@DoctorDNS it makes stuff up as it goes along. I asked it to write a #Shakespeare essay and it told me #KingLear had 7 acts and #TwelfthNight was a tragedy.

@withryn @YusufToropov okay so listen... #KingLear would be amazing and I would definitely buy if you did it. But have you considered #AntonyAndCleopatra ...just throwing that out there?? 🤔😂
Either way, I’m excited for your comic version of Macbeth. Me and some of my irl Shakespeare nerd friends are patiently waiting for July to come. Haha.
