So...it turns out that #KinoLorber's forthcoming #Columbo boxset will now only feature just the episodes, none of the bonus information, commentaries etc! (The closest thing I've seen to an explanation is 'a bizarre technicality.') However! Writers Jim Benson and Scott Skelton, who coordinated and did all that work, have announced they'll be turning everything into "the Ultimate Columbo book." I'll take that! Watching “All My Sons” (1948), starring Edward G. Robinson and Burt Lancaster, on the Kino Lorber blu-ray enjoying it quite a bit. Glad KL is releasing this and other classic era Universal and Paramount features that otherwise seem to have been neglected.

Mail call! My haul from the latest #KinoLorber sale. Quite the eclectic mix if I do say so myself…

WITNESS IN THE CITY (’59): Another fairly obscure French #filmnoir brought back into circulation by the good people at #KinoLorber. Lino Ventura just wants some simple revenge on the man who seduced and killed his wife, but wouldn’t you know it, somebody had to see something. Starts out sensationally, and has a great chase ending, but does struggle in the middle as Lino sloooowly stalks his prey. The photography of late-50s Paris noir-style is to die for (no pun intended).

BACK TO THE WALL (’58): Fairly obscure French #filmnoir, of most note for starring young Jeanne Moreau, who plays a cheating wife being slowly squeezed (along with her lover) by the knowing husband. A feast for the eyes for noir-heads like myself, terrifically photographed, conveying the atmosphere perfectly. Enjoyed the slow boil of the husband’s scheme, as well as plot twists on the way to the (expectedly) downbeat conclusion. Glad #KinoLorber got this one back in circulation. #frenchfilms

SPEAKING OF MURDER (’57): Always a pleasure to visit with Jean Gabin, especially at this stage of his career where he’s often the hardened criminal going for one last score, such as the case in this, marketed by #KinoLorber as #filmnoir but really more a straight up crime drama. It’s fine, though was kinda hoping for more. Annie Girardot adds good spark as Gabin’s brother’s love interest. And fun to see Lino Ventura in an early turn. #frenchfilm

#KinoLorber has acquired US distribution rights to a trio of popular Italian crime dramas -- #Diabolik, #DiabolikGinkoAttacks! and #DiabolikWhoAreYou? The first film was released in 2021, the second in 2022 and the third is in post-production. #LucaMarinelli stars as the title character in the first film, while #GreysAnatomy alum #GiacomoGianniotti plays the master thief in the second. #MonicaBellucci also appears in the second film. #movies

Checking out the new Blu-ray from Kino Lorber.
The idea is fantastic but it is only a little more than a mediocre film and I feel a stronger, less theatrical lead would have would have pulled if up a bit. Robert Stephens is just too “stage”.
Listening to the commentary and Cushing was mentioned. Maybe he is just the obvious go-to, but I can see where he would have really worked well in this.
