On the one hand yes, I could get myself a decent Wok. But why stop there? Then I'd also have a cast iron one and two sizes from pressed steel... But why stop even there?... 1000 varieties with ban-handle, pot-handles or even coated non-sticky?

No. I have my pressure-cooker which is quite well seasoned. Works very well for me.

The new, very scary grater has arrived, and hokey money, that thing is SHARP! Partner decided it needed an appropriately metal name, and has therefore decided it is

GRAY TOR!

I am slightly afraid of it. One of those edges could be used as microtome for lab slides.

Annoyed with myself today - I thought I was doing the right thing, bought some kitchen utensils I was wanting at a local store. Opened an online store I often browse - prices a third or a quarter. Arrrgh! Even allowing for postage, I could have saved.

And yes, that means eventually the small chain store might not be there. But they are so often overpriced, and rarely have anything I want, I am very conflicted.

And while I'm showing you coconut scrapers, I would be remiss if I didn't show you this absolute unit in my in laws house in
(pics from my last visit in 2018/19)

/No alttext in pics - these are 4 views of a wooden carved coconut scraper complete with a curved bowl in front to catch the grated coconut. The wooden portion is carved with intricate designs and birds with long tail feathers symmetrically on either side/

And here's a short 5 s video showing the in action.
The wooden plank is kept under a foot and the tool used sitting down on the floor (or a short stool)

This sort of tool is common in Thailand too.

3/n Here's another of the from my Mom's kitchen - a coconut scraper. I think I have one in Pittsburgh (purchased in Chicago yrs ago when we used to live there). I don't think we've used it in years now - relying on frozen grated coconut.

@CraftyCooper Why not use an immersion blender? I have both an immersion blender and a regular blender, and I find I now never use the regular blender.

@madamscientist yes, this is used for all kinds of pastes. And this is the small one. There is or used to be larger stone here before scale down at Mom's home.
Here's a stone in Kerala in a larger kitchen and household. It has it's own place too (and needs it! That's not something you move around)

Here's the sil noda in action.

Making the Lau paata (opo squash leaves) paste - with a bit more added salt, green chiles, and some poppy seeds while pasting. Put through the pasting process three times (this is in round 2)

in my mom's - a thread 🧵
1/n

There are quite a few tools which I don't really use in my kitchen in Pittsburgh (though I have some).

I'll start with the seel or sil noda (flat grinding stone). Used for everything from grinding dry spices to wet cooked foods - such as these squash leaves (boiled with salt)

1) garlic press: cleaning is an issue on some presses, but not on others. The Kuhn Rikon press is a snap to clean and takes about 2 seconds: amazon.com/Kuhn-Rikon-2315-Epi

That said, I generally use a garlic mandoline for fast thin slices, also cleaned quickly: amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-Garl

And if you're using the bench scraper to transport veg, I find a prep taxi works better (and is also easy to clean):

I don't know, but more than 1600 Francs for a mixer? Does it add gold powder to the ingredients?

Or as you would say in Switzerland: Schnäppchen. (I don't know the Swiss-German term)
