The parsha of Ki Tisa begins with the instruction to “lift up the heads” of the people by collecting a half shekel from each household. This appears to be an idiom for a census, a “head count”, but it is also instructive. When we give charity of even a small amount, our heads are lifted up from our own personal concerns and we become active participants in the larger community. We become a part of something greater and nobler.
