I finished 'Star Trek: Voyager' very quickly following the end of season 3. Seasons 4 through 6 were great, with a wee bit of a drop in quality in season 7. The finale actually hit the feels, and even 'Homestead' S07E24 tugged my heartstrings. Who knew by the end, I would feel Neelix's departure!? Voyagers continue to be vindicated. It was a super slow start, even more so than TNG, but by the end, it was a wild ride with some stellar Trekking.

I launched straight into 'Discovery'. I watched the first season back when it was released. And even then, without the immediacy of my TNG, DS9, VOY watch through, the show was jarring. Launching straight into it was near on shocking.

Even after having already watched the first season of 'Strange New Worlds', the early days of DISCO are hard going. Nothing about their retrofitting aids the story. Nothing. The story itself is already so outside of the Trek and Federation we know that it almost feels like it's trying to retro fit errors, which they were not. After the absolute fan fans like Worf, Martok, and B'Elana, what they did to the Klingons feels a bit, well, racist. I say that and mean it in both the context of the Trek universe and the real world. They did something that feels like devolving, animal-izing. Perhaps I'm not getting it right here, but it's an uncomfortable watch. I appreciate so much Klingon being spoken. It is an absolute travesty that the prosthetics detract from the pronunciation. Operas are written in this language that predate this war! The heresy!

In the same way, Burnham's connection to Sarek and Spock does not aid the story nor needs to be there. It's a big galaxay. Not everyone needs to be related. It's irritating, clout-chase-y and unimaginative.

It's a great looking production. I don't mind new species, nor what seems like a tech upgrade. It's not really that all the time. I like the idea of clandestine Star Fleet operations during war time. I like a "grittier" tone, not everything needs to be TNG. But this first season so rarely hits, it is a disservice to some great characters and performances, and the fictional history of our beloved Galaxy.

And so now I settle in for the slog before the gold.

Damn. Wasn't expecting the dark, serious intensity of this episode. Love that M'Benga and Chapel (two of my absolute favorite #SNW characters) are getting more backstory, and seeing a show that's overall fairly positive flexing in such a challenging direction, directly addressing wartime PTSD. Also super cool as a modern fan to see #Klingons as a genuine Big Bad.
