As I've been watching the threat landscape evolve over the last few months and years I've been thinking about how companies can use their key management systems as one more way to detect a breach. Besides protecting encryption keys a KMS can be a rich source of events that can be indicators of compromise. So I collected some thoughts into this blog. And some moooooar fun... 🤓 This time exploring the possibilities to bring #encrypted #keyset support to #Kryptonite4Kafka. This will allow to work with data keys which are fully protected by a 🔑 encryption 🗝️ which itself resides in a cloud #KMS such as #GCP or #AWS.

AWS KMS External Key Store seems to allow bringing-your-own-cryptographic-keys more easier and integrating to AWS services. This enables data protection for cases when you do not want AWS to handle your keys and might enable compliance with standards like PCI PIN / P2PE that are not supported by AWS.

In 2020, #AWS added the capability to export all or part of any RDS DB Snapshot to S3 as GZipped #Parquet files:

Running metrics against Parquet files in S3 using Athena is quite fast and inexpensive for infrequent queries - once-daily would be fine for my use-case.

I pulled up a snapshot of our development database, jumped through #IAM permissions hoops and #KMS settings, and managed to extract just the table I cared about to an encrypted S3 bucket. Athena worked!
