Labyrinths have been associated with Crete for a long time. The fragment of plaster once formed part of a floor, created 1700 - 1600 BCE, a thousand years before the myth of Theseus and the minotaur was first written down. The other fragment is part of a tile, dating from 1 - 100 CE, the Roman era at Knossos.

The art of the Minoan civilization of Bronze Age Crete (2000-1500 BCE) displays a love of animal, sea, and plant life, which was used to decorate frescoes and pottery and also inspired forms in jewellery, stone vessels, and sculpture. https://www.worldhistory.org/Minoan_Art/ #History #Crete #Knossos #Malia

More 3D Minoan art fun - the breakable kind this time! I have at least three more posts to make about the 3D elements in Minoan art. The more I look, the more I find. And the more I look, the more modern a lot of it feels. #minoan #MinoanArt #AncientCrete #Knossos #BronzeAge #AncientArt

I saw someone share something about visiting #Knossos and how much they enjoyed it. We visited this #Minoan site back in 2016 and our opinion is somewhat different. In fact, it's probably the worst #historical site we've ever visited. Stupidly hot, but that's not its fault, but the "restoration" work and "artistic licence" and "just bloody made-up crap" on the information boards and artwork everywhere were inexcusable.

Today, we visited Knossos. You know how, when you read about it in books or hear about it in lectures, it sounds pretty impressive and cool?
It totally is.

As the cradle of European Civilization and a meeting place of diverse cultures, Crete is a magical island that stands apart in the heart of the Mediterranean sea. Its prominent place in world history dates back to the mysterious and fascinating Bronze Age civilization of the Minoans, who were building lavish labyrinth-like palaces at a time when Athens was just a village. The unique contribution of the Minoan civilization to European architecture is possibly most evident in the great palace structures of the major Minoan centres of Knossos, Phaistos, Malia and Zakros. Perhaps influenced by Egypt and the Near East and evolving through the monumental tombs of the preceding period, these magnificent buildings, constructed from c. 2000 BCE to c. 1500 BCE, were so co...https://www.worldhistory.org/Minoan_Architecture/ #Architecture #Crete #Knossos
