50 years ago #OTD #comet 1973f was discovered on plates taken at #Hamburg #Bergedorf observatory on 7 and 9 March 1973 - now known as 1973 E1 (#Kohoutek) it made history in multiple respects as explained in https://history.nasa.gov/SP-4208/app.f.htm and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comet_Kohoutek. Here it is in January 1974 after perihelion, photographed with a big telescope: the pro astronomers had a lot of fun with it, the public not so much.
