Please have a look at this new paper on the #hemocompatibility of #SiC by Zümray Parlak and coauthors!
We contributed some #KPFM measurements of the different SiC surfaces and terminations (although we normally only work on the other kind of cells 🔋😅). Apparently, blood coagulation is influenced by the surface potential/work function of the substrate material, giving interesting Insight for the use of SiC in implants. #AFM #microscopy @fzj https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/jbm.a.37533

Currently, I am engaged in the #RSCposter conference over at Twitter. https://twitter.com/MicrotoPico/status/1630538555658477570?t=VQJD2Gm9WtsL-5T0nt4RGA&s=19
In our poster, we present #KPFM measurements of dual-phase, oxygen ion conducting materials as a viable way to measure the height and extent of potential barriers at grain boundaries in ceramic #materials. It can also be accessed via DOI: 10.13140/RG.2.2.17073.66402.
In addition, some of the experimental parameters can also severely influence the potential you measure.
Summarizing, #KPFM is a really good technique to measure e.g. potential distributions at interfaces, when you can back up your findings with theoretical calculations or additional experimental findings. The validity is increased with rigorous sample preparation & moisture control.
In our case, we mainy measure in Ar, as some of our samples are not vacuum stable.
Currently, my group is working on several different publications where Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy is used to characterize Materials for different applications.
But what is #KPFM? It is an #AFM based method that measures the surface potential of samples. To measure #KPFM we use the so-called tapping mode: tha cantilever vibrates at its resonance frequency. It needs to have a conductive coating, so the tip is somewhat thicker than conventional AFM tips with a diameter of about 20-50 nm.
My talk on measuring chemical diffusion coefficients of oxygen ion conductive ceramics using a combined polarization-#KPFM method from Nanoscientific Forum Europe in October can now be found on Youtube: https://youtu.be/Bp9CImztclo
