Today in Labor History May 20, 1883: Krakatoa began to erupt in Indonesia. It exploded three months later, causing pyroclastic flows and tsunamis that killed as many as 120,000 people. It exploded with a force equivalent to 200 megatons of TNT, roughly 13,000 times the nuclear yield of the Little Boy bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. The explosions were so violent that they were heard in Perth, Australia, 2,000 miles away. A year later, skeletons washed ashore in Africa, having floated across the Indian Ocean on rafts of volcanic pumice. Some have even suggested that the blood-red sky in Munch’s famous 1893 painting, “The Scream,” was inspired by the color of the Norwegian sky after the Krakatoa eruption of 1883.
