Krill are small animals of typically about one to two centimetres. However, they live in huge swarms and eat a lot of plankton and excrement annually bound carbon dioxide combined of estimated 23 megatons of carbon corresponding to the emission of 35 million cars. The WWF calls for better protection of krill. See http://www.neat-news.com/2023/08/223.php. #krill #carbon_capture
“People can reach out to government officials to let them know how important Antarctic conservation is, and reduce their individual #CarbonEmissions,” says Bransome. They can also look for ways to spread the word to their #communities about the importance of the #Antarctic and #krill. A good time to start is World Krill Day on Aug. 11.
We also need more awareness about the importance of Antarctica and the #SouthernOcean in general, she says.

Dual Threats
While #krill are abundant, researchers have seen a downward trend in population size, says Bernard, and their distribution is shifting. #ClimateChange is one culprit.
#SeaIce is important for krill lifecycles, especially in the juvenile stage, but warming temperatures are decreasing sea ice in the region.
A 2019 study in Nature Climate Change found that krill had shifted the center of their distribution south by 275 miles in the past 40 years.

#Krill help support a #diversity of #MarineLife, but they also play a major role in #BiogeochemicalCycling by trapping #carbon in the #DeepSea — something that benefits even those of us that live far from its frigid waters.
While krill have been spotted thousands of feet deep on the #seafloor, they also come up to the surface of the water to feed on #algae that absorb #CarbonDioxide.

They form the base of the food web in the #SouthernOcean, which circles #Antarctica and makes up about 10% of the global ocean.
Most animals living in and around Antarctica dine on #krill. That includes #SeaBirds, #whales, #penguins, #seals, #squid, and numerous species of #fish that live in the open ocean.

Small But Mighty: Why Antarctic #Krill Are Worth Fighting For
Experts call for action to protect vast areas of the Southern Ocean and help safeguard the shrimp-like crustaceans at the base of the food web.

Second, a step change in our ability to model where #krill live and in what numbers led by
David Green.
Krill are key food for whales, seals etc. And important fishery. Big step toward predicting response to climate.

Scientists and campaigners recently documented huge krill fishing vessels plowing through pods of whales feeding in Antarctic waters, a permitted practice they say deprives the whales of food.
As Antarctic waters warm due to climate change, krill numbers are declining, stressing wildlife that rely on the small crustaceans at the bottom of the food chain.

I've been looking into why Waihau Bay near the East Cape of New Zealand is such a good location for recreational Southern Bluefin Tuna fishing. After working in California for 11 years, the sparsity of oceanographic information about the region is startling for me.

We think of krill (small marine crustaceans) as critical food for whales, seals, squid, penguins and other seabirds, but humans eat them too. Hundreds of thousands of tonnes are harvested each year for fermented shrimp paste, as well as for livestock food, pet food and omega-3 pills. The liquid from the fermentation is used in fish sauce. But as the krill fishery grows (esp. to feed farmed fish & produce dietary supplements), so does the impact on the natural population. #ocean #food #krill
RT @seashepherd: 🚨Krill Crisis Alert 🚨
Our recent encounters with legal -yet destructive- #krill fishing operations in #Antarctica have unveiled the urgent need for change. These super trawlers invade proposed marine protected areas, threatening penguins and whales in their feeding grounds! 1/3
