Krill are small animals of typically about one to two centimetres. However, they live in huge swarms and eat a lot of plankton and excrement annually bound carbon dioxide combined of estimated 23 megatons of carbon corresponding to the emission of 35 million cars. The WWF calls for better protection of krill. See neat-news.com/2023/08/223.php.

is important for krill lifecycles, especially in the juvenile stage, but warming temperatures are decreasing sea ice in the region.

A 2019 study in Nature Climate Change found that krill had shifted the center of their distribution south by 275 miles in the past 40 years.

Scientists and campaigners recently documented huge krill fishing vessels plowing through pods of whales feeding in Antarctic waters, a permitted practice they say deprives the whales of food.

As Antarctic waters warm due to climate change, krill numbers are declining, stressing wildlife that rely on the small crustaceans at the bottom of the food chain.

I've been looking into why Waihau Bay near the East Cape of New Zealand is such a good location for recreational Southern Bluefin Tuna fishing. After working in California for 11 years, the sparsity of oceanographic information about the region is startling for me.

We think of krill (small marine crustaceans) as critical food for whales, seals, squid, penguins and other seabirds, but humans eat them too. Hundreds of thousands of tonnes are harvested each year for fermented shrimp paste, as well as for livestock food, pet food and omega-3 pills. The liquid from the fermentation is used in fish sauce. But as the krill fishery grows (esp. to feed farmed fish & produce dietary supplements), so does the impact on the natural population.
