Made this #kumihimo braid last night to garland the Buddha on my altar- the five colours represent the five #Buddha families which each have multiple and rich symbolic associations! Had to start over twice because I kept forgetting my place in the braiding pattern but it turned out well in the end, I think!

So, after asking about ways to keep my hands busy instead of using my phone as a fidget stim I came across #kumihimo, or Japanese braiding. I was reluctant to try #crafting again as I haven’t had much luck with crochet or knitting in the past, but I was surprised at how easy it was to do the basic braid and even my minuscule attention span could settle long enough to complete a bracelet! Intriguing 🤔

十六丸源氏組です。色の配置を変えて6種類を作りました。
この十六丸源氏は室町時代の鎧兜の紐として使われており古い時代の組み方です。

全部同じ組み方なのに、色の配置を変えるだけで変化が出ます。
4面に糸を置いていくとV字となり、それを重ねて組んでいきます。鎧兜の紐に使われていただけあって固くてしっかりした組み紐となりました。
赤と黄色で出た模様は破魔矢の羽の部分の形なので縁起物の形となります。

I've seen #kumihimo #braiding before but weaving is more interesting to me, I like braiding by hand and what would I do with those cords? Well, weaving has more involved setup and needs more light, I found that braiding thin yarns hurts my pinkies because they have to be bent out of the way the whole time. And, I can braid candle wicks 😎 And also can print the tool easily if I'm lucky to have 1.5h of power straight. So welcome to the flock of my hobbies 😉 #KyivPowerCut

#kumihimo mastodon seems a bit underdeveloped, so here’s an introduction at the deep end.

This is Saidaiji-gumi, a square braid approximately replicating a ~12th century temple braid at the eponymous Saidaiji temple, used to close a sutra case. Though the original was probably made with a four-handed loop manipulation technique, now it can be made on the more recent “Takadai” braiding stand.

Dice bag I made from the purple velvet I embossed. In addition to the custom-embossed fabric, this has a hand-braided kumihimo drawstring (the lighter thread is glow floss) and 3D resin printed glow-in-the-dark skull beads.

@mark I'll see about collecting some of my go-to links for kumihimo (I don't have them handy because I've only recently tried a different method for organizing my bookmarks.)

Some of the stuff referenced in an earlier toot about #kumihimo was using a disc with little slots; I wanted to try a technique which supported that disc on a kind of stand - so that one can operate multiple bobbins.

I even created a kind of ad-hoc stand, for a similar effect.
