Saw a thread on Twitter about "what are you grateful for in 2023?". Answering there would be a cruel bursting of the bubble, but I still want to answer.
So what do I pick? Being alive overall; or not spending winter in a building frozen to the ambient temp, with dead plumbing because it requires pumps to work? Somehow the 2nd option is more scary, I'd never expect to live like that! So it didn't go that far, and I'm grateful.
I have a few more options, no less morbid ;) #KyivPowerCut
A dark day today: morning without power (preventive cuts to reduce the damage in case of hits), then about a hour with electricity and then a planned outage.
Since it all started, we've got the 2nd Internet provider; can supply the router from a power bank; same for the laptops; and I believe providers have generators too, so we rarely lose the landline Internet now. Much more comfortable. The balcony counts as the fridge too.
We are fine, but some other people are not.

Had a really rough night with a sick kid, and then we had gifts from the sky during the day, awfully loud, destructive elsewhere (different districts of the same city) and preventing me from cooking New Year's food. Even from buying the raw materials, until the evening.
Normally any store on New Year's eve is unbearable, and many had no power so didn't work, but there are still way less people in the city. Managed to cook, and kids were unimpressed with Christmas fruitcake π¬π #KyivPowerCut
The last #3dPrinting project I've done so far, a bauble in homemade coextruded filament, and it failed because of a clog. I had other priorities and lately we didn't have enough electrify to attempt hotend cleaning. It's been 14.5h dark hours and I don't expect any power tonight. But while it was printing, it was going fine, and you can see the colour change (orange and mint aren't contrasting but I don't own anything dark). I wanted to print more baubles this season but ah well. #KyivPowerCut
No more constellations, it's been mostly overcast. But I've seen one beautiful sunrise, not pictured, and this time of year I can see sunsets from my balcony, when it's not completely overcast, of course. Me watching sunrises is mostly limited by winter too because I don't wake up early enough. #KyivPowerCut is totally sporadic again, and my printer needs open hotend surgery anyway. Had experience baking a half-baked #bread. I'm sure BreadCode has a tutorial I need to watch π It'sβ¦ edible.
I'm of two minds about special occasions sewing. It's far from #SlowFashion: worn too little, a lot of effort, always with a tight deadline (ok, that's on me). Often fabrics unpleasant to the touch, hate most chiffons etc. But then #sewing this festive knit was pure joy, and cutting it, so sparkly under my projector light, was joyous too. And I'm glad I had a few hours of light and could cut and sew the leggings for my kid to wear at kindergarten play tomorrow. #ProjectorSewing #KyivPowerCut

On the bright side (literally dark, of course), I can see Orion in the sky with my own bare eyes. Being #nearsighted from age 9, and mostly living in big cities, I can see it now thanks to #LASIK and as positive side effect of #KyivPowerCut

10h without light. You know, well, you probably don't, but I can't tell the sounds apart that well, and my tone hearing is definitely unconventional. So when people talked about if that noise was a missile or air defence or what, I was mostly gaping, it's all mostly Bamm! But I guess the city got quieter and I heard some bamms outside, clearer, and eventually even my ears trained a bit. This night I've heard that whistle that predates a boom of fireworks. It wasn't from fireworks. #KyivPowerCut
Today instead of power we don't have water. Well, we didn't have power either for several hours, but first power, then water, and the washing cycle the machine started in the morning is still pending. Also walked outside in the rain and then returned home in the heavy snow π Umbrellas hello with the snow too to a certain extent. #KyivPowerCut
We got new and less optimistic rolling blackouts schedule. It sounds funnier in my language but they lack not just light but also colour π The latter I can fix, so I did. Mostly used Color Exchange in #Gimp but then black signs had noise around them, so I've made new ones in #Inkscape , complete with background, and placed them on all the red cells. There are more red cells than yellow or mint so it felt a bit obsessive. I was frying food so only had a minute at a time π #KyivPowerCut
For the first time ever I got a non-watertight STL out of #FreeCAD. I thought #Cura was overreacting but eventually re-done the mesh in Mesh Design workbench and voila, no errors. Also made knurling deeper, and made it start 1mm from the bottom to have a smooth ring on the printer bed and not a ton on tiny disconnected triangles on the first layer.
Now to wait till power returns to print it.

An article and a visualisation of power cuts from a fellow Kyiv citizen and the author of Leaflet. This graph is about his home, mine would be different, and the longest blackout was a few hours longer than mine too. https://observablehq.com/@mourner/blackouts #KyivPowerCut #Ukrainian
I've seen #kumihimo #braiding before but weaving is more interesting to me, I like braiding by hand and what would I do with those cords? Well, weaving has more involved setup and needs more light, I found that braiding thin yarns hurts my pinkies because they have to be bent out of the way the whole time. And, I can braid candle wicks π And also can print the tool easily if I'm lucky to have 1.5h of power straight. So welcome to the flock of my hobbies π #KyivPowerCut

This photo is from yesterday's power cut that lasted about 7h. I tend to scowl when people equalise candles and hygge; it's such a blatant oversimplification and I'm not a Dane to know much about the concept anyway. Still candles bring comfort when there are no lights, and I even took a bit of shine to their aroma. Not enough to add perfume to my own because yes, I actually made three from raw paraffin wax yesterday. Still chicken to try them out π #KyivPowerCut #candle
