Lab's been having a weird problem with western blots. They look like people are touching their blots with dirty hands.

I'm doing a couple of experiments and having the same problem and I *know* I am not touching blots with dirty hands.

Guess what our G*dmned gloves are leaving fluorescence on the blots.

From left to right, rubbed with my washed bare fingers, or two glove brands washed or unwashed with handsoap.

I learned that you should never use a binocular microscope with only one eye.

I'm working with a scientist with a lot of years under their belt but maybe not the best prior training. They seem unable/unwilling to use both eyes. For our compound scope, I know this is a problem because they need depth perception for certain manipulations. Is it also a problem for a compound microscope?

Are there tips I can share to help them?

You periodic reminder that digital notebooks are awesome!!

I'm working on a manuscript. I know a former lab member worked on the project when we thought it was going in direction X, but now we realize its direction Y. It only took 40 minutes for me to find and review each piece of data.

This saves me work in not having to repeat experiments I've forgotten about, and allows me to accurately attribute contributions to people who are no-longer in the lab.

Consider the lab manager’s job for $42,000/yr to be a mommy to grad students & post-docs, teacher, troubleshooter, negotiator, editor, supply & biotech coordinator, budget hawk, mediator for PIs who forget how to do bench work, and occupational hazard monitor. All so that PIs can sit and write all day at desks in plush offices, chat on the phone, & drink cocktails and joke at conventions. 😏
