Good: this article on #LambdaMOO (which had a lot of stuff in it I wasn't aware of, despite knowing very well what a #MOO or #MUD is, to the tune of “having a toy project that is a Python implementation of LambdaMOO”) - https://if50.substack.com/p/1990-lambdamoo
Bad: following the link to the current-day LambdaMOO website, and finding out the guy who runs it (the site, I assume also the current MOO server? didn't dig) is a cryptobro 😩
wakes up in cold sweat.
jesusfuck NO.
this is what you do if you're looking to get #LambdaMOO shut down the day before yesterday.
Man, ChatGPT is taking me back. Here it generates some code to create a rubber duck on a MOO. @feoh

Also yet to be convinced that ANYONE has come up with a good way to do federation (i.e., still not seeing how mastodon's model (*) scales, but we'll see...). Thus far it's seems to just be variants on (gag and (reverse-gag.
(*) as I currently understand it, which may still be a bit off.

re federated MOO: interestingly that was (sort of) next on Pavel's agenda before he left Xerox to start Placeware (or at least that was what I assumed Fabric -- his plan for MOO 2.0 -- was going to be, though he never really got to fleshing it out). Admittedly not sure what advantages MOO has in this arena.
@wrog @RoyGreenhilt @ColinTheMathmo
There have been afternoons when I wondered if this all would work better as a federated MOO, and each time I went to look if #lambdamoo was still there it was. A generation later #opensimulator was chewing on a a similar problem but somehow didn't gather anything like the same creativity.
@RoyGreenhilt @ColinTheMathmo #lambdamoo We're now at 30 years. Admittedly, things are somewhat less active than they were in 1995. But it's still going... something like 50 people connected at the moment.
My friend:
... has joined another instance and starting to explore Mastodon. He's interested in all sort of computer, mathematical, and other stuff.
Go have a look at his profile and see if anything catches your eye. He says:

Let's start building connections.

This new platform being community run with no real oversight always makes me think back to LambdaMoo, where this kind of thing all started for me. *soclal-issues, Mr. Bungle (if you know, you know) and just understanding on a platform with people from everywhere, who defines right and wrong.
So, obviously I had to see if lambda.moo.mud.org was still listening for telnet on 8888, and it was. It's odd how I can drop in there, and the commands just come back to me even after all this time.
Crawfish's interpolated first connection was on Fri Dec 18 01:10:03 1992 PST,
making him about 29 years, 10 months, and 27 days old.
My LambdaMoo character is older than most of the people I talk to on Discord...
