What a great day I had yesterday, teaching this little group of students the basics of lampworking and glass bead making at the amazing Hopewell Hub in Hopewell, OR. Not only were they eager and very focused, they looked super cool in their matching protective eyewear!

I rarely put earrings in my Etsy shop, on account of their affordability. But I make great numbers of them for street fairs, festivals, etc. These 2 are new. The hearts I made on a small ❤️ shaped steel mandrel, while for the bronze discs - which I avoided making exactly the same - I made tiny beads of yellow and orange Murano glass.

I couldn't resist making another miniature sculpture. This is even smaller, measuring just 1.4 inches tall. The flower can be removed, and the jug worn on a chain. The jug was made on a mandrel, just like a bead, but closed on one end. The flower was made off-mandrel. All Murano glass. etsy.com/listing/1436412367/ha

A piece that combines variously colored powdered enamels encased under clear glass with variously colored frit. The results can be somewhat unpredictable, which is part of the fun. It requires some discipline to prevent the enamels from burning / discoloring before they can be encased, and prevent the frit from spreading out and losing color intensity. etsy.com/listing/1359211144/ha

Here's a necklace of eye beads I made recently, but with transparent glass. Normally, these would use opaque glass all around. Here I've used opaques for the "eyes" while the base color is transparent. A modern twist on an ancient technique. Here's the link: etsy.com/listing/1315383814/ha

I lampwork my own glass spacer and focal beads using a Midi Plus Nortel Burner. I rent torch space at a local glass studio as it’s far more economical for me to do it this way than kit out my own studio, plus my rent spreads the love around to other artists. A short 42 second video shows the process of me making a focal bead. Enjoy!

When I’m not painting and drawing I also design and make jewellery. I also lamp work my own spacer and focal beads. This is my Spectrum necklace: the focal bead is a water planet with polar caps, continents, seas, and clouds - the colour groups of the spacer beads form the spectrum of light after it has been split, which on a water world is light split through atmospheric water droplets into a rainbow.
