@deborahh hi Deb. I believe you’re right! 🌸🙌👍

aus.social/@coolandnormal/1096 I'm a looking to do a qualification in .

Although the qualification can be done in a classroom setting, I would prefer to do it as a partly because I think I would learn more and partly because I need the work. Signing up for a traineeship based qualification requires regular work on a contract.

I have a special interest in particularly
I'm also interested in and helping elderly and disabled people maintain their gardens, their access to food and their connections with nature.

I have farming experience and am happy to do mostly outdoor manual labour. I'm a casual university so a school garden program or other educational environment would also be suitable.

Please if you know anyone who might need in or surrounds.

Edit: I can organise the qualification, the prerequisite is that I be contracted to someone else's horticulture business (rather than self-employed in horticulture, as I am now). There are government kickbacks to make it worth your while.

I currently work at Melb Uni, so is fine, although I would consider giving that up for

Bayer reaches $6.9 million settlement with New York over Roundup safety claims

"Pesticides can cause serious harm to the health of our environment, and pose a deadly threat to wildlife," and companies that make them must be "honest" with consumers about the dangers..."

"The settlement requires Bayer to stop advertising glyphosate-based Roundup as a safe and non-toxic product."

"The $6.9 million will be spent on reducing the impact of pesticides on pollinators and aquatic species."

From mown grass paddock, to planted rows, to raging torrent of water and a loss of plants, to a beginning of a canopy after 1.5 years.

*Commersonia bartramia* feature as the main pioneer in this riparian revegetation site which will be used as managed shade and biomass for the mixed species planting they protect underneath them. Eventually some of the species will be thinned leaving the best performers at a spacing that suits the final goal of complete canopy cover and wild understory which is common of subtropical vegetation in this location.

As the site matures, shade-loving species will be added as I can propagate them. Plus more Lomandra, you can never have enough.

*You can never, repeat never, plant lomandras too thickly!" - 'Save Our Waterways Now' Planting Guide*

*"Lomandra spp. Matrushes, critically important stabilisers, impossible to overplant" - 'The Creek in our backyard' by Robert Whyte*

Ban petrol lawn equipment
"Petrol leaf blowers and lawn mowers are shockingly bad for the planet. Bans are beginning to spread.
Virtually all small engines are two-stroke, which burn a dirtier fuel mix than vehicles do. Advocates say that in addition to the climate-changing emissions released by the engines, workers are exposed directly to their exhaust and rarely wear filters to protect their lungs. Other people complain about the noise they make, especially when so many suburban residents now work from home".

The beauty of in a young planting (others may call it ).

Working in the industry, we are told that all exotic plants are bad and must be removed, while there happens to be a cozy relationship between chemical companies and the goal of recreating precolonial vegetation types (definition: putting the genie back in the bottle). It's a noble pursuit and a simple goal to achieve; weed=bad, kill weed. Note: I'm definitely not saying that some invasive weeds don't deserve all of our ire and don't require chemical control, don't get me wrong.

For the small scale, we can break vegetation types into needs and suddenly they aren't all bad, an exotic herb or grass is not always the weed of a tree canopy when that's the goal we are working for, nor will the conditions be present for it to thrive when that canopied state is achieved.

Plus, look at the photos; it's a concert of life and nothing seems unhappy. A gentle management and our tree goals might get there just as fast as a spray job. Much better than dead spray circles with a chemical manufactured across the other side of the world. At least this has insects.

The ethos of "let nature do the work" isn't wrong and one day the landcare industry may see the futility of fighting nature most of the time and that all exotics are worth destroying, naturalised is a term that's forgotten for some. Careful consideration is always needed.

Perfect weather for planting: cool and a bit drizzly. We planted about 50 plants this morning at Mawson Ponds. It's looking great and only 2 years in.

THIS TASMANIA…
By the smooth waters of the Derwent at Bridgewater, Tasmania, a Landcare group checks out what is growing along the shore.

The hills on the opposite shore show typical landuse patterns for this part of Tasmania with farming and settlement on the lower slopes and the steeper upper slopes with their thinner and rockier soils left to forest.

Brent Street Reserve Landcare will be having our second meeting this Saturday 2-4pm at Brent Street Reserve. We'll be meeting monthly on the first Saturday of every month at that time.

On the off chance that anyone is in the general area and free at that time (or for some portion of it), please drop by and give us a hand getting rid of some boneseed/rubbish!

Regular Wednesday morning community work: weeding, mulching, planting. Lovely weather, good company and the satisfaction of seeing amazing results... everything is growing and looking great after less than 2 years of work along the shared path between Woden and Mawson.

We just finished up our first Brent Street Reserve meeting on what has turned out to probably be 's hottest day of the year so far. A small group turned up, and we got through a lot of boneseed and picked up a large garbage bag of rubbish, but there's still plenty of both left for next time.

We'll be meeting monthly on the first Saturday of the month from 2-4pm going forward, just in case anybody nearby is interested.

Latest update. Free truckload of delicious mulch arrived this morning at , Mawson ACT. We have transformed over 1km of cotoneaster infestation along the bike path into thriving native plantings, in less than 2 years. Always in need of mulch to keep down the weeds.

Friends in Victoria: if you have some spare time / energy, here's a nifty volunteer program that's helping to restore native vegetation. Receive an order, grow seedlings at home, and send them off to a farmer or land manager for planting.

Couple of hours with locals at our regeneration plantings along the shared path from Woden to Mawson. In less than 2 years we have transformed 2km of cotoneaster forest to a thriving, mulched, native plant corridor. Completely forgot to take pics, like an idiot.

Dunno what the farmers of the flood plains are doing up there for their lands to be THAT toxic the water kills fish down river if it’s not because there’s no metropolitan living there.
