@SiobhanVohn Well, I think I need to shift my focus more to sharing experience of building community and community solutions at local scale.

We need to house and feed people, which means we need far-reaching .

The car industry will die when we stop buying cars, which means we need to build transport solutions; the hydrocarbon industry will die when we stop buying fuels and plastics, so we need to build power and packaging solutions.

All this can be done.

"Breaking those locks so that the unnatural phenomenon of a tiny number of people (many non-resident) owning the vast majority of our land and land-related assets (rural and urban) is eliminated once and for all must be the aim of that next piece of legislation" – Mike Russell

Too little, too late even if he means it. is the key to everything in Scotland, and they knew that.

It's he key that unlocks the door, and they dropped it down the drain, flunking the challenge and losing us a decade or losing us altogether.

This is a good move. During the last round of consultation when we were asked about merely regulating snares we, and many others, clearly said that we'd prefer an outright ban but if the Government fell short of that then they had to be regulated to the point of impracticality.

“Land reform have challenged claims that has to rely on multimillionaires spending up to £2bn on new forests and peatlands to rescue the country from the climate crisis.
An analysis by Community Land Scotland accuses NatureScot, the conservation agency, of using crude and unsubstantiated figures to call for a big increase in private funding to reforest the Highlands and uplands.”

With the Corran ferry now not working again, local businesses are closing and local folk are selling up.
These precious houses will get snapped up by non local holiday folk who don’t rely on the local infrastructure (all they contribute is pot hols in the roads and high house prices). Less houses, less work, less kids in the schools.
Landreform needs to happen at this local level now while there are still communities to save.

@HeavenlyPossum Every property that has been fenced in, across which you're not allowed to walk, has also been stolen from you.

"The First Minister was responding to recommendations in a report from Dr Calum MacLeod, who in a paper published on Thursday said a 3000-hectare trigger for public interest tests on Scottish land sales should be cut to just 500 hectares.

Mercedes Villalba, a Labour MSP for the North East, has also called for a 500-hectare limit, calling the Government’s proposed 3000-hectare trigger “timid”."

“No one should underestimate the challenge the Cabinet Secretary faces in her upcoming decisions and the caution that will be being urged upon her…
[she] needs to hear the voices of those in favour of land reform as never before. The forces for change need to collaborate, organise, mobilise public opinion, and support the Cabinet Secretary in making truly reforming decisions.”

Today in Labor History July 4, 1840: The anti-rent association of Berne in the Hudson Valley issued its Declaration of Independence, starting the Anti-Rent War, which lasted until August 1845. Also known as the Helderberg War, the anti-rent war was a tenants' revolt in upstate New York against the patroons, who acted as feudal lords with the right to make laws. The first meeting of the Anti-Rent tenant farmers was held in Berne, New York on July 4, 1839. Leaders of the revolt were tried for riot, conspiracy and robbery in 1845. The first trial resulted in no convictions. A re-trial in September 1845 saw fist-fight between the attorneys who were sentenced to solitary confinement for 24 hours. One defendant, Smith A. Boughton, was sentenced to life imprisonment, but was pardoned by the pro-Anti-Renter John Young.

Are there any discussions on here about land reform? I never see any, and it's one of the things that most interest me over on the other place.

Nobody should own land as if it was a thing.

"This is just another example of the fact that capitalism simply doesn't work for people, and that we spend an awful lot of time and effort working around the manifest failings of capitalism to produce an economy which supports the many. What the Scottish rural economy needs is full communism now"

Something Lesley Riddoch said towards the end of last night's meeting in Castle Douglas made me think: now that Peter Murrell's gone, is it time for folk on the left (like me) to rejoin the and try to push for a policy?

I remain convinced that the majority for is on the left, and that it's by creating a strong radical left vision based on and that we'll win.

And another, on much the same topic:

"But the unelected UK Supreme Court overruled this. The rights of a landowner arbitrarily to do as he pleased with his land overrode, in their opinion, a tenant farmer's right to home and livelihood. In doing so, they sentenced the farmer in the case, Andrew Riddell, to death, since he shot himself rather than leave the home where his family had lived for over a hundred years."

I often find myself reading through old essays looking for an argument I've made before. And it's worth doing, because many of them are good. Here's one from twelve years ago which bears reposting:

"I've always thought it was interesting how the enclosures — the great land seizure by the elites from the commons — occurred just in the period where the elites no longer had anything to offer the peasantry."
