131 years ago today. Christopher Murray Grieve, better known as Hugh MacDiarmid, was born on 11 August 1892. Widely regarded as the most important Scottish poet of the 20th Century, this is his memorial near Langholm by the sculptor, Jake Harvey. Friday run

Stayed near Arkleton in a poor imitation of a shepherds hut (far too nice). Friday, the dug and I ran from there up to the Hugh MacDiarmid memorial. Long climb, and then along the ridge. No Map, the Malcolm memorial was in view all the time. 13.5K - picked up by partner grumpy as recovering from surgery, took solace in the ice cream parlour. The walled garden is worth a visit - hard restoration work has been done. Links in photos alt.

Walkers are Welcome Town - Langholm

Sitting in the Scottish borders, the Langholm area is characterised by beautiful river valleys between green, rounded hills. The hills in the area covered by The Langholm Walks Booklet are not of great height – The highest point is 1705ft.- but many of them command magnificent views.
