Two years ago, we were at 500,000.

#April23 Today is #WorldSpanishLanguageDay, spoken as a mother tongue by 496 Mo. people (2022 official figures), of which 26% speak any of the many varieties of #Mexican Spanish. Our language continues to grow in popularity worldwide due to its strong presence in the media, literature, films and arts. It is the second most-spoken language in the world by number of native speakers after Mandarin Chinese.

Curiously enough, #Spanish "hasta" comes from #Arabic "haṭṭa".

Every language has a unique way to express concepts and some of those ideas are difficult to translate directly - without using a lengthy explanation - to other #languages. In the image below you will find a few words that are frequently used in #Mexican #Spanish (although most of them are also common in other Spanish-speaking countries), which have no direct translation in English.

#Portuguese and #Romanian are geographically the most distant of the major Romance languages, so it is only normal that they have had developed in different ways. The following image highlights a few of the many words which, in spite of sharing the same origin in Classical or Vulgar Latin, have evolved and acquired distinct meanings in Portuguese and Romanian.

Mastering one of the #Romancelanguages will certainly speed up the process of learning another language of the same family but you will find some stumbling blocks along the way: changes in pronunciation, false friends, varying usage both in prepositions and in the subjunctive mood, as well as diverging grammatical gender of many similar words as shown in the following chart. 

A #meme I saved a few weeks ago from the bird site - thought it’d be a fun one to share! As a #Japaneselearner I couldn’t stop chuckling when I first saw it. I think it’s from a newspaper clipping.
