A reached out to the nearby music school 2 years ago to start my daughter on lessons. I had never expected the young teacher we got assigned would speak #Cantonese but fate would have it and I asked if she could speak it. She was THRILLED to teach in her own tongue and my daughter was her first student in Cantonese. She only teaches a day a week and is in demand so I switched my daughter to another teacher and gave the spot to my son who needs more language help.

I'm sitting outside listening and wow. Just wow. Part of language learning really is finding opportunities to expose them to it in different contexts. I'm feeling really fortunate we have this.

I finished it last night. Now that I can compare my experience with it to the Spanish one, I think that Language Transfer (LT) is an effective #LanguageLearning resource insofar as it methodically introduces and provides opportunities to practice using various structures, but it is not useful for speaking and listening comprehension because of its reliance on non-native speech.

Referencing the Spanish course, I said before (i.e. two months ago) that I thought a complete beginner would come away with a “solid foundation” in the language. Being in that boat with Swahili, I think it’s a fair assessment. LT doesn’t teach much vocabulary, so I’m constantly looking things up,* but I know (or can make educated guesses about) how to use them, which steadily narrows the gap between what I can say and what I want to say.

I still think that ignoring the advice to avoid writing things down is worthwhile. Even if I’m unlikely to revisit my notes, not taking any would have made information retention much more difficult.

En italiano, se usa “è” incluso sobre lugares.

Más, no hay la distinción entre “tener” y “haber” en italiano.

Ensnared in a lowkey rivalry with another Duolingo user - we're always just narrowly bumping each other out of the top three rankings. A bit embarassing that our strings are being pulled by an animated owl on a language learning app, but ngl, it keeps me practicing just that little bit more than I would otherwise, so 🙃.

Anyone with good tips for language learning?

I got an A in GCSE French but that was almost 15 years ago, and I’ve only really dabbled in it since. I can read it / understand it to a degree but can’t spontaneously speak it with any real fluency, probably made worse by the worry of getting it wrong.
