"An unholy alliance of far-right ideology and mercenary venture capitalists has politicized the classroom. We must reject their vision of America and insist that a liberal arts education accessible to more than just the elite is one of the great foundations of a democracy.”

Accents don't spread easily in the language classroom. A "native-speaking" teacher doesn't guarantee native-like sounds, nor does a "nonnative" teacher result in deviant pronunciation.

Nativeness isn't crucial for language teaching, but it's often used as a gatekeeping measure in the industry.

Could it be a language teaching myth that teachers can't gain insights about the target language from their students?

For the last few weeks I've had terrible self steem regaedng my classes. I felt defeared after the class, as if my wasted the time of my students.

This week's diferent. For the fist time in a while, I'm satisfied with the outcome, and I'm glad the shit train is over.

I'm sure my students noticed the bd streak, but I wonder how much they did.

Me (a Spanish teacher): There are a LOT of great reasons to take German class!

My German teacher friends: EVERYONE IN THIS COUNTRY SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO TAKE SPANISH!

Shrug, both things can be true!

Forthcoming presentation "Bilingual Perspectives on Language Teaching: The View from the Goal" at the Japan Association for Language Teaching (JALT) Osaka Chapter Back to School conference on April 23, 2023; event details will be updated at osakajalt.org

ABSTRACT: A goal for language learners is to function in plural languages according to their own purposes. A bilingual perspective starts from that attainable goal. Learners tend to idealize L2 mastery or becoming bilingual, so it becomes other people’s business. Monolingual teachers tell students by their example, “go where I have not gone,” whereas a bilingual teacher says, “come to my state of functioning.” This presentation details a paradigm shift from the predominant monolingual second language acquisition (SLA) paradigm to a developmental bilingual perspective.

Similar to this clever tee shirt:

"a monolingual foreign language teacher tells you in effect to 'go where I have not gone,' whereas a bilingual teacher tells you with his or her example, 'come to the state of functioning that I represent'"

"Online Education as a Discipline" (2021) was the culmination of 25 years, and has been read by nearly 7,000 teachers and researchers worldwide at researchgate.net/publication/3 and academia.edu/45386298
At ResearchGate there have been 15 recommendations, and they found a citation to the article in a new book by the British Council, Language Teaching Experiences during Covid-19, available at researchgate.net/publication/3
Educators and scholars in all fields should find the article informative. It has been cited mostly in reference to Emergency Remote Teaching during the pandemic, but it actually goes way beyond that issue to the role of academics in society, providing many definitions.

Japancasting Episode 18: "Bangladesh Hospital Report in English and Japanese"
Osaka Jogakuin College (OJC) students report on their visit to , . OJC students contributed to start a charitable children's ward. These students speak bilingually, so it provides a lesson in either or as a Foreign . After the students’ presentation, I interviewed a student. That script is available for English learners to read while listening, in the blog post by Parveen Sharma at eklavyaparv.com/edusomedia/jap
Listen to this
at, for example, open.spotify.com/episode/5YDez or hubhopper.com/episode/ep18japa
While Bangladesh was struggling to develop, Japanese students were able to develop international social consciousness and, as a result, greater self-awareness.

Regarding vs. code-switching between languages, Rafi Saleh in Bangladesh, who did his PhD in Australia on translanguaging, informed me: "According to code-switching theorists, a bilingual has two linguistic systems, whereas a monolingual has one. For translanguaging theorists, both bilingual and monolingual people have one linguistic system, but bilingual people's systems are more complex, and they learn to divide the system into two for external forces rather than linguistic reasons."
This accords with my view of always-on bilingual mode. The pictures show my proposed paradigm shift from a conventional model to a perspective.
