For Oppenheimer weekend, I broke out a couple of mementos from the two summers that I worked at Los Alamos in a support role for their high performance computing group. (ASCI Blue Mountain was just coming online around that time.)

These are two-factor authentication devices that were required to log in anywhere and are very similar to today's time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) that are in growing use today.

In a country where less than half of the people feel like their daily lives are secure, and that has thousands of nuclear weapons it can't find a use for, this is how we spend our public tax money.

"Los Alamos will have equipment to make 30 nuke cores by 2030, according to DOE memo"

"The Los Alamos National Laboratory will install by 2030 the equipment needed to make at least 30 plutonium pits annually, according to a Jan. 19 memo from the deputy secretary of energy.

Formally known as the Los Alamos Plutonium Pit Production Project 30 Base Equipment Installation subproject, the installation will provide the lab with “the minimum equipment necessary to provide 30 war reserve PPY [pits per year]” by Aug. 30, 2030, according to the memo signed by David Turk, the deputy secretary of energy."

This has been big news everywhere, but I am very gratified to see it. Over 30 years ago I was an intern at Los Alamos on their laser fusion project, and it was the most amazing technology I had ever seen. Ultimately the LLNL tech won out over the LANL tech, leading to the creation of the NIF. Still, I am excited to see this breakthrough come from laser fusion first! Great things to come!
