Latest read, The Pit (1987) and Not From Detroit (1988) by Joe R. Lansdale, from High Cotton.
In The Pit, a small town imprisons lost travelers and forces them into gruesome death matches, much the way dogs are forced to fight.
In Not From Detroit, an elderly man fights Death itself to keep it from taking his wife of 50 years.
'Natural storyteller' comes to mind with Lansdale--and that's a rare gift.
