Seems a #lantastic network would actually be very easy to setup for a simple DOS #network sharing needs.
Need to play around with if I ever get the time to do that. And find supported network cards in my storage. Good thing I have hoarded a bunch of ISA network cards :D

After a bit of digging, it seems it basically a sound card, a very crappy one at that. You could talk over the #LANtastic network, record messages and send them.

I have 3 of these, unfortunately no suitable cables, but I think I can figure out the pinout, so it shouldn't be too hard to make. No idea if these even work, but a 2Mbit retro network sounds like fun.
