#Lao #newyear 'Piimai' takes place in March or April right before the start of the monsoon. It's no surprise that #Buddhist traditions have thoroughly integrated water into the ceremony, including a good washing of the temple monks with perfumed water to rinse away the sins of the year and provide blessings.

Each household member cuts candles measuring the circumference of the head, length from elbow to fingertip, and collarbone to navel. Lines marked in the wax indicate the same in years. These are twisted together to form the individual, then merged to make a family candle.
