New mothers who received long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC) within 60 days postpartum were 5x less likely to become pregnant within 2 years. Making LARCs more accessible can help patients obtain desired birth intervals.

To address needs of contraceptive users a team at the University of Sydney Faculty of Medicine and Health is developing a new non-hormonal long-acting reversible method of contraception with a novel mechanism of action (MOA),

To check relevance of this novel contraception among end-users, we interviewed 30 Australian female contraceptive users.

Avoiding hormones and side-effects were primary concerns when making contraceptive decisions. A contraceptive's mechanism of action marginally impacted users' contraceptive decision-making.

To address needs of contraceptive users, research & development of novel contraceptives should focus on reducing contraceptives' side-effects and avoiding hormones.
