They found what/who they're looking for circling now near Bell Gardens at the #LARiver. Fire 1 with them too now. Gotta be #SAR swift water rescue.

CSUN's Jessica Kim noted that when Metro's A Line (formerly the Gold Line) "was being constructed, work crews uncovered remains of the original irrigation ditch that once brought water from the #LARiver to the Pueblo of #LosAngeles during Spanish colonial times."

Via an LA Times story, a scene of the #LARiver prior to its cement channelization. Looks pretty comparable to my restored wetlands pic ⬆️

My main #birding patch is along the #LARiver, so watching footage of the river go from 1ft deep to 20ft deep in the storms the last few days has certainly had me worried about what the river will be like when this atmospheric river passes over.

This morning, a great blue heron was fishing amid the debris, and I was relieved to see the trees that live on the river bottom held firm and are still standing!

Where I left off... #LARiver as a Joke!

The #LARiver was channelized in concrete under a century ago (completed 1960). It's now widely acknowledged that even tho this action accomplished its stated goal (confine river, limit flooding), many effects were undesirable & adjustments will need to be made +

Residents, human & otherwise, are living with petroleum's toxic residue: from extraction sites (even right near homes, schools), to diesel exhaust to refinery outputs, all ringing the harbor (& diesel ☠️ follows distribution infrastructure as far as it goes).

Anyway the usually dusty/trickling but occasionally rushing #LARiver has been enrolled into a MASSIVE envirotechnical system (really, systemS), tracing south from video

Why did it make sense to planners to confine the LA River in cement & destroy acres of #wetlands? One reason is to make land support freight movement. LAR empties into San Pedro Bay, home to the western hemisphere's largest container #shipping #port complex.
