Heard about a 9th century Irish monk's lament for excessive drinking scribbled in the script on a Latin grammar book. The single-word note says , meaning 'drunkenness' or 'hangover'. According to an Old Irish dictionary, this is a compound of LAITH 'ale' + IRT 'death'. Ale-death is such an interesting word.
