’s take on Western genre doesn't catch fire until mid-point & turns The Searchers storyline into something that resembles more of a Conrad/Herzogian, existential road trip. Static long takes & 4:3 aspect ratio w/round edges betray its supposed genre trappings. Nonetheless, is a gorgeous, seductive trip. His formalist, minimalist approach is worthwhile as it morphs into something much more adventurous & rewarding.

Kiro Russo lets his visuals to do the talking - the white dog running down the hills at night, Elder having a panic episode in the street among crowds, mangled electric/telephone wires, meat grinder image preceded by mining operation... culminating to rapid-cut images all jumbled together climax serving as a mirror to complex global society we live in. El Gran Movimiento is a topical film w/ strong visuals as well as boundary pushing cinematic exercise.

The way it is shot and its hazy atmosphere, Il futuro has an enigmatic quality that pulls you in. Manuella Matelli, with her cat eyes & asymmetrical hairstyle is stunning as a girl who is thrown into an adulthood. With strong acting from both Matelli and Rutger Hauer, Alice Scherson makes the film about two damaged individuals getting together very poignant and seductive without ever becoming sentimental.

All the connective tissues of the film are all spread out- the fact doctors are ear-nose-throat specialists - whispers and misheard information, smell, singing, but Martel’s approach is so subtle and fluid. The sordid details of middle class bourgeoisie can be seen as Almodovar-esque melodrama. But as in all Martel's films there is always a it's-barely-there-but-there satire in Holy Girl. I can't really think of any director working today who works on her level.
