Today’s listening is ‘I Speak Because I Can’, the 2010 album by Laura Marling.
This, Ms Marling’s wonderful ‘new-folk’ second album, is under-stated, delicate and powerful, all at the same time!
The meaning of her lyrics can be quite hard to fathom at times, but at others they are beautifully simple:
“Winter was on us,
At the end of my nose,
And I never love England, more,
Than when covered in snow”.
A quietly haunting and beautiful album.

Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can
The opening track (Devil's Spoke) on this solid album feels a bit like a gloss on KT Tunstall's "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree", but also rock-influenced folk music in general.
It's a winning formula for her, and another extremely good LP.

Today’s listening is ‘Animal’, the 2021 album by LUMP.
LUMP is the name given to the musical project formed by Laura Marling and Mike Lindsay.
This is an excellent album of electronic music, quite far away from the sort of album that you would expect from Laura Marling.
Being German, I like to think that LUMP stands for Laura Und Mike’s Projekt….
Well worth a listen!
