78 Carlton Place on the south bank of the Clyde in Glasgow. Designed in a classical style by Peter Nicholson and built in the 1810s, it's the centre piece of an impressive block of Georgian townhouses. Lining what was then the upper harbour, these houses would have been occupied by the city's merchant class.

In the the middle of the 20th Century it became associated with Musollini's National Fascist Party in Italy, and indeed the term Fascism is derived from the term Fasces. Despite this, fasces are still used as a symbols today, including by the French Army, the Guardia Civil in Spain and on the Seal of the United States Senate.

Originating with the Etruscans about 3,000 years ago, it's now most commonly associated with the Romans where it was a symbol of a magistrate's power. In the 19th Century is was commonly used to indicate civil power and the collective rule of law, explaining this example on a former police office in Laurieston.

If you look carefully, you'll seen this symbol carved on a variety of older Glasgow buildings. It's called a Fasces and it represents a bundle of wooden rods wrapped round an axe and a blade.

After lying empty and pretty much derelict since the 1990s, Laurieston House is apparently currently in the process of being turned into flats. To me, this seems sacrilegious, especially as it could easily be kept complete and turned into a major visitor attraction/events venue.

This building stands almost directly opposite another of Miller's creations (a Glasgow Style tenement built in 1898 which I posted a photo of yesterday), giving an indication the breadth of his capabilities.

The new Bridge Street Station in Glasgow. Designed by James Miller and opened in 1890, it replaced the original Bridge Street Station further north on the south bank of the Clyde. It closed in 1905 after the expansion Glasgow Central Station on the north side of the Clyde.

Three neighbouring buildings on Bridge Street in Glasgow showing four very different architectural styles, but they all work together.

Left: Art Deco warehouse (1935); Middle Top: Traditional mid-19th Century sandstone tenement; Middle Bottom: Neo-Classical red sandstone bank inserted into the older tenement (1888); Right: Glasgow-Style tenement (1898).

Former Commercial Bank of Scotland building (on the ground floor, with flats above) on Bridge Street in Glasgow, built in 1884 and probably designed by Bruce and Hay.

This was presumably part of a continuous block of similar buildings, going up the streest to the left and right, which have since been demolished.

James Miller's rather fabulous 1898 Glasgow-Style tenement on Bridge Street in the Laurieston area of Glasgow. Most Glasgow-Style buildings are built with red sandstone, while this one is made from blonde sandstone, presumably to blend in with the older tenements around it.

The rather grand entrance to the former South Branch of the Savings Bank of Glasgow on Bridge Street in Glasgow. It was created in 1888 and was probably designed by J.J. Burnet.

The rather wonderful Art Deco facade of the former Co-operative Society Drapery Warehouse on Bridge Street in the Laurieston area of Glasgow. It was designed by Cornelius Armour and was built in 1935.

A ghost building on Oxford Street in the Lauriston area of Glasgow. I love the way the chimney flues seem to have been extended twice as the now-disappeared building was engulfed by larger neighbours.

The India Building on Bridge Street in Glasgow. This is the worst infestation of buddleia I've seen so far on a listed building.

Built in 1876 for Robert McGregor and Co who made stationery account books and paper bags, it remains an attractive and impressive-looking building despite it's current perilous state. Not surprsingly, this building is considered at risk of being lost.
