For those who appreciate irony:
My Copyright Law book is electronic open access, and the $19 "printed" version they sell is a complete, bound, softcover textbook.
Our UM Maritime Law Society posted some advice for 1Ls during orientation. It’s general advice, so if you’re starting law school, this one’s for you!
I’m in #LawSchool. Naturally, the bug is in Books.

First day as a CLI. So far, lots of paperwork and computer setup.
Yesterday was my final trial for lit skills. Got the verdict, slept 12 hours… think I’m hooked.
I have an animal law paper due tomorrow, a space law exam to take, and my final lit skills trial on Saturday; I’m swamped.

Equal Justice for All… ish.
For my afternoon class, I read one of the most dense academic papers I’ve seen. I’m pretty sure half of the sentences were over 49 words long.
This morning, my feedback on my bench trial included “you can’t say things like ‘sour grapes.’ The jury won’t know what that means.”
FML.
I just had a breakthrough in lit skills!
Today, for the very first time, I felt comfortable questioning a witness.
They've had us writing out questions to prepare, which is not at all the way I used to prepare for television interviews.
I used to have notes of important facts, and topic notes of extremely important points to cover. But the rest was knowing the research I'd done was in my head.
I got jammed for time so I didn't write out questions for one of our fact sets, just the dates and 3 big points.
Right in the middle of the direct, it hit me. Familiarity. Back on old turf. Comfort. Suddenly I was free to talk to the witness, point to the jury, adjust spontaneously to the answers.
That was a good feeling. I was getting tired of feeling like a fish out of water.
I can't handle new Picard episodes and new Mandalorian in the middle of the semester.

Cons of going to law school in your 40s:
- You cannot operate on 3 hours of sleep.
- Sometimes you get emails with 60 pages of reading for tomorrow and you’re already booked solid.
Pros:
-Your lived experience makes you seem like some sort of wizard to a 23-year-old.
-You know when to slow play your beverages at mixers.
-You have lots of good stories to tell at mixers.
-You often remember landmark cases that predate the birth of most of the people in your class.
-You’ve sorted out if you volunteer to go first, you only need to seriously prep 1 problem for lit skills.
I've gotten good enough at cooking that I burned my mouth not waiting for it to cool from the oven.
I'm doing some reading for class. The casebook says "consider the following case from this century."
Readers, the case is from 2001, which is not where my head was at when I read "this century."
I'm going to spend spring break in DC working with an NGO on policy research concerning sea turtles!

Before law school, the Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine would have looked like a disaster.
Now it looks like a decade of Daubert motions.
Also, FFS, get the hell out of dodge. Go visit friends for a couple of years. Don’t sit there and breath that crap.
I think we're going to have to create a standard for AIS/VMS and make an accurate signal part of the Law of the Sea as a crime of universal jurisdiction.
It would have a dramatic effect on policing IUU fishing, and it's going to become quite necessary as vessel automation becomes more pervasive.
(Imagine a Tesla on autopilot, except its a 80,000-ton Panamax tanker on the high seas.)

That was fun... now back to reading cases.
