The site is 50km from the Black Sea, in #Samegrelo, western #Georgia. It sits on the foothills of the Greater #Caucasus mountains, on the edge of the Plain of
#Colchis, where it would have secured routes out of the mountains and across the plain. It seems to have been an important military/ administrative hub from the 6th century BC (Kingdom of Colchis) to the 6th/7th century AD (Kingdom of #Lazika), with the standing fortifications built in phases from the 4th to 6th centuries AD
