Seeing that my recent vote for best has reignited, here’s another. Not so much a cover this time, because the original can never be matched; rather a spine-tingling take. ’s live version of ’s ‘Where did you sleep last night?’ One of the most socially-charged and important tracks ever written and recorded. Here ’s incomparable add a new and genuine dimension. m.youtube.com/watch?v=hEMm7gxB

Dear Listeners,

Maybe you know this from Creedence Clearwater Revival, but it's an old Leadbelly tune –

Jeron "Blind Boy" Paxton, "Cotton Fields" (Playing for Change, 2015)

When I was living in Maryland I was listening to quite a lot of . He spoke to me like a voice in the wilderness. At the time I had a significant collection of his recordings. It is next to impossible to replace that collection now. I only have a handful of albums at this time. I will need to track down others. He recorded the same songs often, playing them slightly differently.

This 2020 article on terms and takes us from widening use in 2014 (where I first heard it) to 1930s:

says at the end of an archival recording of the song that he’d met with the Scottsboro defendants’ lawyer, who introduced him to the men themselves. “I made this little song about down there,” Lead Belly says. “So I advise everybody, be a little careful when they go along through there — best stay woke, keep their eyes open.”’

A spout by elaborates on using the term :

‘Lead Belly, the iconic and musician, coined the phrase "stay woke" at the end of his 1938 protest song "Scottsboro Boys." A song that told the 1931 story of the legal railroading of 9 Black teens accused of raping 2 White women (think "Central Park Jogger" case of its day).

Huddie Ledbetter, aka Lead Belly, was born on 20 January 1888. Or 23 January 1888. Or 20 January 1889. There is some disagreement.

Today in Labor History January 20, 1888: American blues musician and songwriter, Lead Belly, was born. Lead Belly usually played a twelve-string guitar, but he also played the piano, mandolin, harmonica, violin and windjammer. He served several prison terms between 1915 and 1939. Folklorists John Lomax, and his son Alan Lomax, recorded him in prison in 1933 and 1934 for the Library of Congress. Lead Belly recorded numerous songs about work, poverty, prison, racism and discrimination, such as “Bourgeois Blues,” “The Gallis Pole,” “Take This Hammer,” “John Henry,” and “The Red Cross Store Blues.” He also wrote antifascist songs like “Mr. Hitler.”
