Make it *the* issue. Don't apologize, don't shrug it off, don't succumb to #LearnedHelplessness. Make it our demand, a litmus test: "If elected, will you vote to pack the court and restore democratic legitimacy?"
Meanwhile, *Cemex* is already bearing fruit. After an #NYC #TraderJoes violated the law to keep #TraderJoesUnited from organizing a store, the workers there have petitioned to have their union automatically recognized under the *Cemex* rule:

Alas, not all the Biden appointees have the will or the skill to pull this trick off. The corporate Dems' darlings are mired in #LearnedHelplessness, convinced that they can't - or shouldn't - use their prodigious powers to step in to curb corporate power:

And it's true that privacy regulation faces stiff headwinds. Surveillance is a public-private partnership from hell.

We all need to #Unlearn our #LearnedHelplessness, at every level of #Society.

The left's opponent isn't the right - it's cynicism.
It will never cease to amaze me, how some people can have such little understanding of or curiosity about how toilets or anything else works, given their feelings when such things stop working. #learnedHelplessness
Although this isn't on purpose, and @Gargron is on our side, as far as I understand it, forcing us to click on images to view them entirely is inherited from Twitter, along with flooding us with emails and with notifications, in order to make us develop #LearnedHelplessness, "hopefully" leading us to depression.
And then there are notifications rewarding us for spending our time in front of our screens, which has pervasive effects on the ways we think.
I just realized that #CalyxOS does as well.
Never even thought to try it.

Buttigieg runs a powerful administrative agency and has broad powers. Neither he nor his predecessors had the courage to wield power, all evincing a kind of #LearnedHelplessness against industry lobbying. There's a difference between *being* powerless and *acting* powerless. 17/

@davdittrich To be clear, I think the #LearnedHelplessness/ #autonomy angle here is spot-on and good advice. And it *may* contribute to #QuietQuitting, but thar leap that isn’t supported well in the article. In fact, the author even conflates quiet quitting with passivity and non-contribution, which is a reach. Quiet quitting isn’t about quitting in place; one of the reasons the term is so controversial is it defined as doing one’s actual job and no more, yet it is cast as a form of “quitting.”
#learnedhelplessness #autonomy #quietquitting
@davdittrich It’s a good article on #LearnedHelplessness, but I don’t think the author did a good job making the case that #QuietQuitting is the same phenomenon.
#learnedhelplessness #quietquitting
"Default passivity offers an explanation for #QuietQuitting. People have been stressed for years, but they don’t have the freedom to just up and quit. Feeling powerless to escape, they respond in a way [that] is normal and predictable: by becoming passive." On the sixth day of our #ScienceAdvent, we would like to talk about a debunked concept in neuroscience: learned helplessness. In short, it turns out that helplessness is not actually learned, but it's the default response when faced with prolonged inescapable adversity.
What we find really cool is also the fact that some of the researchers who popularized the concept and conducted a lot of research on it are the same who realized they had gotten it backwards.

#LearnedHelplessness only exists if you are convinced that those in power are somehow competent and not drooling dipshits with one very lonely brain cell and absolutely no imagination.
One thing the last six years and on have inculcated in me is a #LearnedHelplessness. The right revels in imposing this emotional paralysis. Our late-stage #corporate #dystopia cultivates it. Our #cis #het #white #patriarchy enforces it with violence. Et merde.
And oh did the #covid #pandemic practically seal it in amber, this learned helplessness.
Mostly I feel we, as a society, are only just starting to awaken from the catatonia that's been our state, our survival mechanism while trying to cope with #nazi #politics and murderous #hate being shoved in our faces everywhere we turn.
We've been experiencing prolonged #trauma. We need to heal.
And I tell you, for me? Cutting away from #twitter has been healing. Just these past few days of not having all the hate and bigotry and utterly ridiculous fascist nonsense filling my feed, wounding my soul as I indulged in my self-inflicted #DoomScroll through the toxic demons in our socio-political hellscape—getting away from that has been so good for me. I like to think of myself as pretty tough. But even the hardest of us need a break or risk battle fatigue.
So I've been here listening. Reading. Thinking. Marinating my mind in #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #LGBTQ #trans #fediblock, following #cw discussions and some of the more notable #moderation failures. We here in the #Fediverse are going through a real reckoning—with one another, with ourselves (especially #white selves like me)—as we hash out how exactly we can evolve this amalgamation of instances into a fair and just and empowered and happy community that doesn't keep tripping over its #diversity.
I sure hope we can. I have hope. I need hope. Because we can't count on being able to do it again in whatever the next corporate-owned you-are-the-product sell-the-conflict hellsite might be.
As for me, I'm working as I can to chip away at my own learned helplessness. Writing again. Serving my own muse. It's not easy, opening my heart again. Daring to hope. Risking being wounded again. But the alternative is giving in to the learned helplessness, which in the end is only wounding myself. And I don't think I can bear doing that to myself anymore.

@henryfarrell @adapalmer I do think that #learnedhelplessness is a thing, though. When people are told frequently enough that they lack some capacity, over a long enough period of time, from enough different directions, *and the world materially conspires to deprive them of opportunity for the exercise of this capacity*, my worry is that some threshold number of them may come to believe it. And it’s not easy to find folks who can help you develop innate capacity.
@rachelcoldicutt Verily, our hopes are bound by inertia & hostile action both. It takes specialized knowledge, expertise & skill to combat the latter, and while that’s never easy to come by cheaply, or particularly thick on the ground to begin with, there is at least a clear understanding of how one might go about drawing on those resources to advance one’s interests. I don’t have a clue what to do about people’s own #learnedhelplessness, though, other than raise up counterexamples.
why C, C++, and Rust books don't start off with a table just like this is beyond me. #learnedHelplessness
