So, there are a bunch of characters I’m learning in Chinese that are similar enough to trip me up all the time, and one of them is 绍, as in 介绍, ‘to introduce’. You see how the right side of that character has a knife 刀 and a mouth 口?
I got it to stick in my mind by thinking, “Let me introduce you to #JiangCheng. He has a knife mouth (and a tofu heart).”

Is there a resource for Mandarin Chinese learners that makes it easy to create multiple flashcards for the same word, i.e. one that shows the Chinese characters and asks for the Pinyin, one that shows the Chinese characters and asks for the meaning, one that shows the Pinyin and asks for the meaning etc.? Because I'm not doing all that manually 😩
So far I've been testing myself on meaning and pronunciation at once but it's not ideal. I would prefer an Android app but Windows or browser-based is also fine. #LanguageLearning #LearningChinese #LearningMandarin #LanguageLovers

I found this site to practice #Chinese reading. It's pretty cool.
Do you have any favorite sites to practice reading simple texts or any other language skills?

@DrKen posted about a cat-themed Japanese haiku contest. Intrigued, this is as close as a I can come:
爪步得細緻
撲向雪⋯抓冰白毛
窗戶陽光夢
It’s not Japanese. But there is at least a slim chance that a Japanese speaker can get some meaning. More likely no one who sees it can understand at all. (Quite possibly not even if they speak Mandarin, the attempted language.) Thus here is an English version:
Careful stepping paws
Pounce at snow… catch ice-white fur
Window sunlight dream
I am using the novel 13.67 by Chan Ho-kei to practise reading in Chinese, but it’s becoming more and more difficult.
The first chapter was relatively okay, with a lot of patience and dictionary, I was able to read it slowly.
The second chapter though… so hard! It took me several months to clear the first pages, so I’m going to take a break and find a book easier to read!
This being said, the book is excellent!
English translation by Jeremy Tiang “The Borrowed”.
I was browsing Chinese books today and found a title that sounded familiar by an author called 鄭明燮 (Zheng Mingxie). I assumed it was the name of a Chinese author and was surprised to see that it’s actually Jeong Myeongseop (정명섭), a Korean author that I like!
I was wondering, do Korean names written in hanzi sound like Korean names to people speaking Chinese? If you see the name 鄭明燮 (郑明燮) for example, can you tell that it’s probably a Korean name? 🤔 I’m curious to know.

Now that I've found an instance I intend to stay on, it's #introduction time!
Hi. I'm Ocean, your local 30+ nonbinary language nerd with a current focus on Chinese languages (Mandarin and Cantonese ... for now). I'm chronically ill and don't (can't) get out much, so I spend a lot of time on the internet.
I'm also neurodivergent in ways that affect my ability to socialise, but I've been making an effort to get better at it lately and perhaps this recent shift in the social media climate will turn out to be exactly the push that I needed - we shall see.
I like to ramble about the various languages I speak/am learning and occasionally turn into an amateur linguist if some random phoneme attracts my attention. Not sure what I'll end up talking about in this place, exactly, so be prepared to see anything from jokes and shitposts to personal musings and complaints, as well as the occasional comment on pop culture - which I am usually behind on - and the Chinese dramas/movies I watch both for language practice and entertainment.
I try not to get involved in discourse much if I can help it. Also not an activist, but I would describe myself as a leftist of vaguely anarchist leanings with a heavy focus on #DisabilityJustice.
When I manage to read a book, it's usually SFF. Big fan of dragons both Western and Asian. 🐉
I hope I can make some friends here! And no I have never heard of brevity what is that
