But because I'm a *damned fool* I responded to some of them in Spanish.

Now I'm exhausted. My brain is ashes and fumes.

I was practicing Spanish and had a question about verb tenses, so I went into #Duolingo's discussion forum and found a conversation that had been closed for three years.

In it, a woman asserted that when you learn a language, "you conform to the language. The language does not conform to you."

I thought, you poor naif. Dwell sweetly in the past, for the future has no home for you.

One of the things I love about learning languages is when you learn a rule and you apply it for the first time in conversation — and it works.

Asked the barrister at one of our local cafes if he’d listened to Pusha T, but I’d never said the word “escuchaste” before. I just applied the rule, hoping it wasn’t an exception. It wasn’t.

(I say “rule”, but these are actually more like embodied social regularities. You know what I mean.)
