Stated hypothesis include...
1. students may not know what effective strategies are
2. students may not know how to implement the effective strategies
3. perceived cost may outweigh perceived benefit

"Retrieval Practice Consistently Benefits Student Learning" but how to get students to do it?

This is funny, but I actually do think confusion (at least temporarily) is very valuable in our journey to learn something worthwhile:

In thermodynamics, we have extensive and intensive state variables. This post explores some of the important scaling requirements when we compute the various thermodynamic partial derivatives.

When we first started to study the subject and began with the basics, it was very disconcerting to not understand some of the details. But then as we learned the big picture and how the theories are applied, things began to make more sense, so we grew more comfortable.

But the true experts and greats are those who have a complete understanding of almost all of the "knowledge stack", to better enable them to tackle the unknown frontiers.

I now realize: For us mere mortals, we "understand" a complex/difficult field (pick any area in physics, math, biology, economics, ...) when we begin to master the big picture concepts, which also causes us to conveniently forget the points of confusion we had about the basic, foundational elements when we first learned them. So this makes us more comfortable so that we feel like we "understand."

Temperature, pressure, volume, etc. are state variables in thermodynamics that are uniquely defined in equilibrium states. In fact, they were invented precisely because we had simple sensors that directly measured them in equilibrium states.

But what about entropy? We don't have an "entropy sensor" that can directly measure it. So how do we make sense of why entropy is a state variable?👇

The efficiency of a Carnot heat engine is a universal property that directly follows from the First and Second Laws of thermodynamics, and the beautiful reasoning behind it was a key triumph of physics in the 19th century. This post simplifies and distills the underlying logic:👇

Why is the second law of thermodynamics kind of like group theory? And is there a simple way to understand why all reversible heat engines MUST have the same efficiency? 👇

When I first learned thermodynamics, I encountered new concepts such as state variables (e.g., energy), non-state variables (e.g., work and heat), and perfect versus imperfect differentials. This really confused me. Is there a deeper rationale, and what is the underlying mathematical logic? And how is this related to electrostatic potentials and conservative electric fields? I think there is a simple way to explain this. 👇

I regularly get confused about direct sums versus tensor products if it's been a while since I last thought about the topic, and then I would need to re-remember how things work. So I decided to jot down some notes to save some time in the future. Here's a post:

When you first learn about vectors and rotations and dot products in Cartesian space, they’re simple and easy to understand. And then you learn about Minkowski space and curved spacetime and different reference frames, and you need to work with metrics versus coordinate transformations...and things get complicated. Here is my attempt to untangle the metric versus the coordinate transformation: sunfishstanford.github.io/embr

I'm writing a series of blog posts on learning math and physics by being confused.😎

Here is the intro: sunfishstanford.github.io/phys

The first post is about the very easily misunderstood transformation of tensors (covariant vs. contravariant vs. invariant). I started by seeming to show an object is all 3 simultaneously (obviously wrong), but it all makes sense by the end. See here:

, Volume 1:

- The idea that people have "comfort zones." They do not!

- The idea that people can or need to "unlearn". Forgetting is a thing - unlearning is not!

- The idea that "learning styles" exist. Everybody learns somewhat differently, but there are no "visual", "oral" or whatever types!
