I've started doing #plaintextaccounting not sure yet if I'll mainly use #ledgercli or #hledger the journal formats are nearly identical so I can keep it mutually compatible for now.
It'll depend on the differences of the formats and the tools, but maybe the tools aimed at ledger-cli will just work anyway?

A case of tumbling into a rabbit hole from inside a rabbit hole. While I was understanding #emacs I discovered #plaintextaccounting and #ledgercli. Now Iβm migrating my finances to this from last few days.
#eMacs #plaintextaccounting #ledgercli
I'm clearly biased, but as I see it #hledger is #ledgercli fleshed out and made production-ready.
Found an interesting post about migrating from #ledgercli to #hledger which has lots of information on how CSVs can be imported with rules:
https://veronneau.org/migrating-from-ledger-to-hledger.html
I'm also doing the "upgrade", but my changes have been mainly to monthly ingestion and reporting Makefile recipes. Because I'm using https://github.com/jamescooke/icsv2ledger to import bank statements, I think the hledger CSV rules are less important for me, but still interesting.
@redgreenrefactor Been using #ledgercli for more than five years.
Use it for the obvious financial accounting: household accounting, mortgage, budgeting, etc.
Also use it for tracking my time spent working at my day job. I've got a script to generate a ledger output for the day's work using JSON output from my pomodoro timer - I use an imaginary currency called P for Pomodoros. 1P = 25 minutes.

I do really enjoy accounting with #ledgercli, wrote some scripts to generate a projection of future income and expenses and can create a monthly report to show which months are better and worse.
Bonus: Using gnuplot I can create graphs that show the real development of income, assets and expenses and figure out where my money goes.
I started writing down my transactions in 2019 and realize the importance the older I get, especially with kids.
Iβve been using #ctags with #ledger for a couple months now. Itβs been a complete game changer to update my journal with fast completions and code navigation. It works out of the box with my editor of choice #neovim/#vim and also with other editors, sometimes with a plugin (#emacs, #vscodeβ¦).
Iβm now sharing the ctags configuration, as this could benefit others: https://cj.rs/ledger-ctags/
Please let me know if you have issues or if some things are unclear!

Does anyone else use ledger CLI for personal financing? Iβve been using it for a few years and am very happy with it but also curious of how others use it. I mainly use it for tracking expenses and savings. #askfedi #plaintextaccounting #ledgercli #personalfinance

#nameandfame Friday is upon us once again.
#ledgercli is a double-entry accounting system I still fail at miserably, but I persevere. It's been around since 2003 and still actively developed! That deserves a round of applause πππ
My father has been a banker his whole life. He has excellent understanding of #ledger
Instead of #tally he wants to use a Free Software. I know about #ledgercli and #hledger
He doesn't know plaintext accounting, terminals or emacs.
What would you recommend I give him?

The more I use #ledgercli, the more I realize how great this accounting tool is. Kudos to John and all ledger contributors !
