@gardening my first candystick delicata squash is almost ready! Don’t worry, I’m planning on leaving them all on the vine until frost, but this little dude has started ripening for sure. I’ve got loads of candysticks coming along!
Thumb for scale with the biggest of my leeks. It’s at least 20% larger than average, but the rest are pretty uniform, so I think they’re probably ok.
I really don’t see how to hill them without getting dirt in the leaves. When I transplanted the seedlings, I was really careful to bury them as deeply as possible, and I guess it worked. They’ve all gotten taller but only from above the first leaf, if that makes sense? One time in the late 90s I made potato soup with leeks, but that’s the extent of my experience with them 😅 Love it when the “I wonder what I’ll do with all this” crops thrive!

I grew so much garlic! I grew enough garlic to give away and to use like mad in cooking. The chickens damaged one of the three beds before I protected them, but two of the beds made so many fine bulbs.
#leeks are coming along fine I think. I started two varieties, “verdonnet” and “mechelen blue,” this spring. It’s a rather intricate process - you start them outdoors, in very fine soil, and grow them in crowded rows until summer. Then they get transplanted into properly spaced rows in their full time beds. I’m at that stage - both varieties are knee high, but the dwarf ones are shorter. They look fine and nothing is bothering them, so they’re a win.

The big main bed has had all the garlic harvested, there remains #onions, #leeks, #shallots & other heirloom #tomatoes. Some “Day of the Dead” #marigolds have returned! My #zinnias, #pumpkins and #squash have all burst through the woodchip layer. Soon this whole #garden bed will be criss-crossed by vines.

A difference from previous versions is I put #cheese slices between the mince and potatoes which added so much flavor!

Cheap lunch idea: leek and potato soup. Trick is to bake a very large potato wrapped in foil and let it cool overnight. Believe me, it makes all the difference. Sweat leaks right down in butter/oil (good 10mins), add cold cubed baked potato (incl skin), add 1-1.25 ltr veg bouillon & pinch black pepper, simmer 10 mins. Blitz. Thin down with water as desired. It’s next puréed, adding grated Parmigiano Reggiano, a whole egg, and a knob of butter. It’s processed until smooth and emulsified. The pasta is cooked, then folding in the crema, wetting with a bit of the pasta water, and then folding in the peas.
