Massachusetts Bill is seeking to charge fees for legacy admissions. It would be a small start, but a start nonetheless.

Eliminating legacy and donor-based admissions won't be enough to maintain diversity at colleges after the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action, U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona told Axios in an interview this weekend .

Is Unfair? Are ?
These may wrong the very individuals who are given these preferences, set not to help those students, but rather the school or the country. If a student is a worse candidate for admission on standard measures than other admits, they may have a greater struggle to make it through school. Historically, the poor kid, the woman, the racially, ethnically or religiously foreign student had to be exemplary candidates; now they may need extra support.

This country is quite shitty but seeing some schools getting rid of legacy admissions does make me smile.

"Wesleyan University, a liberal arts college in Connecticut, is ending legacy admissions, which give a leg up to the children of alumni, just weeks after the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action.

After the Supreme Court decision, legacy admissions came under heavy attack because the practice tends to favor white, wealthy applicants over Black, Hispanic, Asian American and Native American students"

From 2020, but I believe its relevance is boosted in light of recent actions. "I envision education as a tool to destroy institutional racism." insidehighered.com/admissions/

"According to the complaint, nearly 70% of legacy and donor-related applicants to the school identify as white. The effects of preference, LCR director Ivan Espinoza-Madrigal suggests, are deeply inequitable.

“Why are we rewarding children for privileges and advantages accrued by prior generations?” Espinoza-Madrigal asked BBC News. “Your family’s last name and the size of your bank account are not a measure of merit, and should have no bearing on the process.”"

"The groups—the Chica Project, African Community Economic Development of New England, and the Greater Boston Latino Network—argue that by accepting legacy students, Harvard is denying admissions to qualified students of color who’re less likely to have a familial tie to the school."

"Each year, Harvard College grants special preference in its admissions process to hundreds of mostly white students — not because of anything they have accomplished, but rather solely because of who their relatives are," the complaint states.

"The Fair College Admissions for Students Act, which [Jamaal] Bowman proposed with US Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) in the 117th Congress, and which they plan to reintroduce in this Congress, focuses on a frequently neglected form of affirmative action that primarily benefits wealthy white people—and that the court has permitted to stand. Specifically, it would end colleges’ and universities’ practice of giving legacy admissions preferences to the children of alumni and donors. As Bowman and Merkley note, 'Legacy admissions can take up between 10 and 25 percent of available slots at top universities. Some estimates indicate that applying as a legacy student can double to quadruple one’s chances of getting into a highly selective university. In using legacy and donor status in admissions decisions, institutions give preference to students whose families attended or donated to the university, reducing the opportunities for the descendants of enslaved African Americans who built and maintained many of these institutions and other underrepresented students.'”
