I want to talk about disability representation and healing in Legend of Korra.
I know Legend of Korra only calls the poison "metal" and doesn't ever identify it, but based on these facts:
1. silvery-grey
2. Is in liquid form at room temperature
3. Causes neurological symptoms
4. Causes inability to feel limbs
5. Causes inability to walk or loss of coordination and/or balance
6. Vision problems
7. Severe pain
This all fits with Mercury poisoning. Now mercury poisoning is a slow neurotoxin killer. It has to build up over time in order to kill someone, which is why Zaheer and his lackeys put a shit-ton of it into Korra. She had to have so much in her blood for it to work fast enough to actually take her down in the Avatar state. This also accelerated her symptoms.
And it's why she is in a wheelchair unable to move or feel her legs, why she has neurological issues afterward, and why it takes her so long to recover and learn how to walk and have coordination and balance again.
Mercury poisoning if left in the system for a long time can cause kidney and brain damage; however, lucky for Korra it's not in her system long enough. Barely an hour or so I think? It's hard to say about passing of time in that show, but Team Avatar and others got to her pretty fast. So that means it wasn't in there long enough for permanent brain and kidney damage.
However, she'd still need to be regularly checked for any neurological issues that might pop up overtime. This could include vision problems, nerve issues such as nerve pain or tenderness or numbness, tingling in her extremities, and others more specific to the brain or nervous system within her spine.
This doesn't mean she'd die at a young age. A person with these issues can live to a ripe old age as long as they continue to be monitored and given the care they need. Korra has that care with all the people who loves her, and I'm positive Asami would make sure Korra has the best care in the world (considering Asami's wealth). So Korra could easily live to an old age with Asami.
She would still be able to do Avatar duties as well, even if she ends up with some neurological issues down the line. She just needs to adjust her approach to compensate and allow others to aid her in her duties (like Asami helping her and the brothers and Air Nation, etc). It's okay to rely on others.
This is all to say that Korra is disabled now, and that's okay. Disabled people like myself exist and we deserve love and care too. We deserve to THRIVE. There is nothing bad or evil about disability.
I know that our society tries to shove 'disability=bad' down our throat, but that's to justify the horrific treatment society does to us.
Anyone can become disabled at any time. Maybe that might instill fear into some people, but I can assure you that it doesn't have to be scary. If we build systems of care instead of systems of harm, we wouldn't have to fear becoming disabled because that system of care -- like the one Korra has at the end of the show -- would help us thrive to the best of our ability.
We deserve those systems of care. We deserve love. We deserve good healthcare, housing, food, and other necessities for free/low-cost.
We don't have to live in systems of exploitation that throw away our lives because the capitalist overlords deemed us non-productive and worthless. We can take their shitty ideology and throw it in the wastebin.
And instead build up communities of care and mutual aid. We see how Korra's PTSD and her symptoms improve once she is back in the circle of her community of care with Asami, Mako, (eventually Bolin), Tenzin, Jinora, Ikki, Meelo, Pema, Kya, Bumi, and even the Beifong family and Lin. All of them provide care and support. Through that community of care, Korra learns how to thrive again.
That is what we need to build up. That's why I love her arc.
I too went through that dark period of pain and isolation. I too ran from my PTSD, literally as in ran to a different state to escape it, which like Korra discovers, doesn't quite work out well. We can't escape it. We have to face it and CHOOSE to heal.
It is ONLY when we CHOOSE to heal that we experience true growth. We don't learn and grow because of suffering in or itself. That's a lie told to us by society to get us to stay in suffering, to not choose to heal, to not choose to end the exploitation that hurts us.
No, we learn and grow because of the CHOICE to heal and build ourselves up in a healthier and more just and kinder and more loving way. Often, we make that choice because we have support to aid us in that healing, to give us what we need to follow-through.
Growth and learning cannot happen until we choose them.
Korra choose to heal when she's with Toph, and in doing so, she reconnects with her community of care, who in turn helps her recover and helps her learn to thrive again. So no matter what the long-term repercussions of mercury poisoning is for Korra, she will have her community of care to help her get through that and continue to thrive.
That is what I wish all disabled people could have.

First thing i Love about #LegendOfKorra (well, ok, first thing is that it's main character is a woman) is that the main character super hero has a family. It's so rare that shows bother giving the main character a family and actually use them.
Families are messy and full of drama, I'm glad it's used so well in Lok

the Red Lotus group in #LegendOfKorra really are just a D&D murder hobo party used as antagonists
(really incredible the lengths the showrunners went to to make the "people deserve to be free, not living under an authoritarian monarchy" guys the villains, tho)
What did I do for the past few days when I wasn't feeling well?
Well, therapy for an hour yesterday, but outside of that?
I spent the time researching:
1. The limitations of energy-bending in the Avatar-verse of Legend of Korra and how that relates to how Avatars can use it.
2. Cross-referencing the Energy-bending ability with the fifth element aether that was used in medieval theories in China, Europe, and a few other places between the two.
3. Cross-referencing the above with Quantum Mechanics and the intriguing entanglement, weirdness with measurement, and other fun trademarks of the theory.
4. Going through my Shared Moments series to make sure I foreshadowed all of this correctly and that the details all make sense, and then updated my current chapter to push toward the final reveal for the end of Act 2.
I'm a geek. Yup. But it was fun at least. #LegendOfKorra #WorldBuilding #AO3

"Let go your earthly tether. Enter the void. Empty, and become wind" - Guru Laghima and Zaheer, #Avatar
This has got to be my favorite line from either #TheLastAirbender or #LegendOfKorra, because it still gives me this odd chill. It's a concept straight out of Asian meditational philosophy, applied to the hard-ruled magic of the setting, and when a very complex and sympathetic villain watches his lover die, it gives him the mythical ability to literally fly.
#legendofkorra #thelastairbender #avatar
Ha! I think I'm getting better at this drawing business.
Yes. Asami is flying her Future Industries Airship she designed and had built. Korra watches her while blushing (probably thinking dirty thoughts). This is from Book 3 - Korra is about 18 and Asami 19.
I'm proud of this one. I used a reference, sure, but it's all handdrawn, inked, and shaded using pencil and charcoal by myself. For some reason charcoal was not blending the way I wanted to but ah well. I'm not sure I did the shading with the light and shadows as well as I could have. Also, forgive the shaky lines; my hand kept trembling.
I'm probably going to post this along with a chapter with the Book 3 fanfiction I'm doing for Legend of Korra.
In my fanfiction series: Shared Moments, Asami isn't a staunch capitalist. She's too focused on helping the people and using her wealth/company to do so. She doesn't care as much for profits and is okay with the company barely breaking even (as long as it's enough for her employees to get paid a living wage), and she's pro-union. I took her strong sense of justice and 'doing what's right' part of her personality that the show displayed and ramped it UP.
I also have her in Book 2, Book 2.5, and now Book 3 using Varrick's company (he gets convicted for funding terrorism and using Triads to make an attempt on Asami's life) to create an international public shipping infrastructure with an accountable to the public committee to oversee it. (Ambitious, yes! But we all know Asami doesn't do anything halfway!)
She's also in a relationship with Korra by the end of my Book 2 rewrite, though the end of Book 3 is going to be a painful ride. Book 3.5 will be painful too. But by Book 4, the two will have worked through their respective PTSD and bumps in their relationship.
I'm also writing Asami as autistic-coded, Korra as likely having ADHD, and Bolin as definitely having ADHD (since the way they're portrayed in the show -- they really fit those). Mako is really the only neurotypical on Team Avatar. LOL
Anyway, if interested, you can read it here: https://archiveofourown.org/series/3370741

I've found some new post-rock/post-metal bands while browsing for some new listens, and it's so lovely.
Been helping me write the final chapters of Book 2.5 of the #LegendOfKorra rewrite/AU I'm doing. I still plan to write Book 3 and 4 with the ripple effect of my changes to Book 2.
I still want to finish my original Elivera novellas too, but fanfiction project has been a good way to cleanse my system and find ways to write around brain fog and #LongCovid collapses.
I think I'm starting to finally have a system to it all. I was able to write a short fiction piece using this system, so it gives me hope that my return to my own fiction will go easier.
Because stressing myself out over brain fog hijacking my ability to write isn't a good solution to my recovery. But this method has been more helpful.
In my #LegendOfKorra Fanfiction (it's the sequel to my rewrite/AU of Book 2), I wrote a chapter that dealt with grief: https://archiveofourown.org/works/47033497/chapters/119414743
The grief described here is loss of life in a war, but the main focus of the chapter was the acknowledgement of not being okay and crafting a grief ceremony to help one heal.
I think #grief ceremonies can be quite powerful. I'll quote a bit from my notes for that chapter:
"The Grief Ceremony here is loosely based on some of the Trans Day of Remembrances ( #TDOR ) I helped organize in the past. TDOR is held on November 20th to remember all the trans people murdered. A few selfless individuals scour through reports to find their names, but if names cannot be found, we still honor them by stating where they are from. The names are recited, then we have a moment of silence. Then some of us organizers would speak.
I think it was either 2017 or 2018 that I asked why we didn't also celebrate their lives. Why not have a line or two about who they were as people? And then we all collectively work on a piece of art to display all the lives lost. That's when I came up with the tree. The Unitarians painted the tree on this large roll-up-able canvas, and I brought it to the event. We pinned it up, and we laid out the photos of all the people who died (along with a line about their life) and if we couldn't find a photo, we spelled out their name, location, and if possible a sentence about their life. We also had a bunch of notecards.
Trans people then got up on stage and recited poetry, sang songs, (I played my bongos as I recited a poem I wrote), and shared stories about living our truth, about grieving our lost, about what a better future would look like. By the end of the event, the tree had been fully decorated - people went up to it to tape the pictures and names like leaves. Some people drew things on the notecards and taped up those. I folded a peace crane and taped it to the top of the tree. It was beautiful by the end. We'd created something with our grief.
And that is the crux of this scene. To use our grief and create something beautiful with another person to honor those who died. We are all people, and we all are stories waiting to be heard.
So when I was thinking about ways to heal from the trauma of war, I decided the Southern Water Tribe would have had their own grief ceremony because of how much they were brutalized in the One Hundred Year War. They'd have so much to grieve because of all that loss. And since they are a Water Tribe, water is the core of their ceremony. However, since Asami isn't of that heritage, Korra offers something else to add to the water part. Earth and fire, upon which Asami asks for air to be used too. To show that the deaths are not in vain.
No matter what side people are on in the war, the people involved are still people. That's the crux of it; war is brutal and horrifying. Sometimes it cannot be avoided, but many times it can and should be avoided. The hope is that at the least we learn from that. To make sure it Never Happens Again.
A historian - can't recall her name - wrote about how history doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes. Today we're seeing our present rhyming with some pretty awful parts of human history. But it doesn't have to be that way. Standing up, speaking up, fighting back against the tide of hate is needed. That's what Team Avatar did - fought against Unalaq's arrogant hate and pride that harmed so many. But those that died in the battles were still people. We're all people. There's no such thing as "the other" like some people claim. *We are all people.*
By holding a grief ceremony for all who was hurt or killed can help one find the strength to heal and keep going, keep up the fight toward justice and love. So that's the reason I chose to write the grief ceremony like this.
Even in our darkest moments, when all hope seems lost, someone like Jinora comes to hold out light. To illuminate the way. Each person we meet, each person we share our story with and listen to theirs in turn - all offer a nugget of light. Illuminating the path of our journey. So remember that when things are hard. Remember that even when we feel utterly alone, a helping hand exists and that we are loved."
This is why I believe Grief Ceremonies should be annual ceremonies that our communities host in order to collectively process our grief and complex emotions around the myriad situations, events, and hurt we often face.
Oppressive systems are traumatizing and grief-filled, and as we tear them down and replace them with something better, we will still need grief ceremonies to help us transition, process the anger and pain, and move forward.
So I guess, what sort of grief ceremonies do other people do?
I found compilations of Anime opening songs, and now that's my soundtrack for the last few chapters of my Legend of Korra rewrite. LOL
We'll see if folks like my take. I escalated things so much in my take.

I'll just add further depth by digging into their air bender search and the ramifications of book 2). #LegendOfKorra #AO3 #ArchiveOfOurOwn
P.S. I'm working on and off on my own original novella too, but that's harder to do since I'm creating that all from scratch and takes up way more brain energy. But I'll post about that too eventually. That novella is a #solarpunk novella.
