What to make of the #LegislativeCoup in #Peru today (12/7/22)?
Apparently, they arrested the President, and swore in the Vice President. None of the last several presidents have lasted a full term in office (although I sincerely thought Castillo might), and Castillo, while popular, was vehemently opposed by the highly unpopular congress and therefore lacked much actual power.
#Kawaschun is my go-to news source for South American politics, and their article is brief: https://kawsachunnews.com/breaking-president-pedro-castillo-arrested. Obviously I don't trust any of the US-aligned news sources, with the US's extensive history of backing right-wing coups against elected left-wing leaders in #LatinAmerica like #PedroCastillo, and support for the #Fujimoristas in Congress specifically. But the US media seems to be reporting widely on this, with the narrative that Castillo was the one trying to stage a coup by dissolving Congress. I'm very, very skeptical of this for obvious reasons, but I can't find much information from better sources.
I'm extremely confused, shocked, and afraid for Peru. Does anyone else have a better grasp of the situation?
