My favorite film of all time. Do I care about it ending with an upbeat, overly optimistic mood? Not really. But whenever I defend cinema as an artistic medium against literature or music, I usually mention Les amants du pont-neuf. #PolaX is about dark obsession, a love story that's quite similar to his earlier films, just without whimsical romanticism. It's not the graphic sex scene that differentiate it as a more mature work. Holy Motors marks a comeback of a major French auteur. It was very disconcerting to see him all broken up & bitter at a Q&A session for an omnibus film, Tokyo! He was having a hard time financing any of his projects. Holy Motors is a product of a frustrated artist finding ways to express himself under difficult financial circumstances. Its disjointed, episodic narrative reflects that. It's vastly different from his earlier work but just as mesmerizing nonetheless. #LeosCarax #DenisLavant
