An improbable moth species I saw in Ecuador earlier this year. Something in the Megalopygidae family - probably Trosia genus. I'd gone to Ecuador to look for birds, but many of the birding lodges had lights set up to attract the moths... to attract the birds... to attract the birders. As a result I got no sleep for 2 weeks. So worth it.

For today's moth shot we have Feralia deceptiva. We only get 2 Feralia species in BC, and I'm lucky to catch them both where I live. Unique-looking species; even my moth-deploring wife admits they're pretty attractive.

Idalus critheis. One of the crazier moths I saw on a recent trip to Ecuador.

Sometimes the common name of a moth isn't a good match so I rename them. Example: this is the Elegant Grass Veneer. I call it The Grumpy Pumpkin. Scientific name is Microcrambus elegans. This moth is 12-15 mm wingspan.

This moth doesn't have a common name so I gave it one. I call it Flying Bark because when resting on the ground it looked like a piece of tree bark. Official name is Lytrosis heitzmanorum. It hosts on oak trees in the caterpillar stage. Observed in my backyard habitat.

The awkwardly named Purplish copper (Tharsalea helloides). Spotted nearby in North Vancouver this summer.
